Inspiration
The inspiration behind SkinBook was the universal struggle with skincare. Recognizing that everyone's skin is unique, we aimed to create a solution that offers personalized skincare guidance, making home made remedies, expert dermatological advice accessible to all, at one place.
What it does
SkinBook leverages AI to provide precise skin analyses and customized skincare routines in seconds. It addresses a range of skin concerns, from acne to aging, offering users tailored advice and actionable routines to improve their skin health.
How we built it
We built SkinBook using a tech stack that includes Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for image analysis, along with machine learning algorithms implemented in Keras, TensorFlow, and data manipulation with Pandas. The frontend was developed with React, and Flask was used for the backend framework, with deployment on AWS EC2 for the backend and GitHub Pages for the frontend.
Challenges we ran into
Data was the major problem, it was not easily accessible, and was limited. Integrating AI for accurate skin analysis was challenging, particularly in training models to recognize a wide variety of skin types and conditions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully creating a platform that can analyze skin concerns with high accuracy and provide personalized advice is our proudest achievement. We're also proud of building a solution that democratizes access to skincare expertise, making it available to anyone even with a smartphone.
What we learned
Throughout the development of SkinBook, we deepened our understanding of AI and machine learning, particularly in image analysis. We also learned about the importance of UX/UI design in making complex technology accessible and easy to use for the end-user.
What's next for SkinBook
Looking ahead, we plan to expand SkinBook's capabilities with more advanced AI features to tailor for body, hair and nail needs as well, including real-time skin monitoring and progress tracking. We also aim to grow our database for even more personalized skincare recommendations and explore partnerships with skincare professionals and brands to enrich our offerings.
