Inspiration
Both founders of this company are involved in the healthcare field. We are fascinated by the intersection between technology and medicine, and we believe that unbounded opportunity lies within the prospect of leveraging augmented reality within the next decade to democratize healthcare.
As a second-year medical student currently in clinical hospital rotations, Om has experienced the current advantages and challenges of the current medical system in place and aims to apply this insight to ensuring healthcare services can be more efficient and practical for underserved populations
As a fourth-year premed student, Sanjiv has had extensive experience with creating web applications and hardware with the common aim of making healthcare more easily accessible.
What it does
SnapMed aims to collect initial information for any individuals experiencing any type of acute symptoms.
Individuals add our organization as a friend on Snapchat before making their first video.
The first screen of the lens prompts the user to fill in an initial report, which asks about common symptoms as represented by an array of emojis and then requests the user to record a short clip explaining their symptoms.
The lens then scans the user's form of ID to verify their identity.
Finally, the individual sends this information as a snap to our organization's account. Based on the contents of the message, we snap message the appropriate local healthcare provider (HCP).
Then, we snap message patient with a confirmation follow up and their HCP’s snap username.
From this point on, follow ups are directly between patient and HCP on snap; our primary role is simply to catalyze this essential first step to connect them to each other.
NOTE: In many instances, case managers/social workers may mediate these exchanges of information.
Our lens also offers options to send follow-up videos to their newly connected HCP, including updates on their current symptoms and information pertinent to their past medical history.
How we built it
We used the Lens Studio system.
Challenges we ran into
Becoming familiar with the AR development studio was a challenge initially due to our unfamiliarity with its capabilities. However, we were quick to learn about the limitless features that Snapchat offered and aimed to use it to its fullest potential.
We also faced challenges in determining the flow of information across the different steps of the lens due to privacy concerns coupled with ease of use. However, after consulting with various attending doctors, we were able to establish a logical sequence.
What's next for SnapMed
We have 6 primary goals for the next 12 months:
-Partner with our first healthcare/hospital system within a major US urban center -Integrate statistics on health disparity into our value proposition -Incorporate beta-testing of potential monetization avenues -Emphasize Snapchat's focus on privacy to address HIPAA concerns -Work on the preview video to enhance marketing approach -Develop ML for diagnosing skin, posture, movement related issues (unprecedented potential for growth)
