inspiration

sometimes life can really get you down, and you don't know where to go from there. what to do to make yourself feel better. what you can do to help yourself without hurting yourself even more.

what it does

currently, "a soft space" provides several links to websites and pages that can help with emotional distress.

how we built it

HTML, lots of research, and Visual Studio Code. our GitHub website is courtesy of GitPages, and our domain website is courtesy of Major League Hacking and Domain.com

challenges we ran into

this initially started out as a mobile app, but the services we were using to develop our mobile app kept crashing or not working, so we ended up switching to a website design.

accomplishments that we're proud of

this was our first hackathon: none of us have ever done something like this before. we had quite a few false beginnings, and it was a pretty rough journey overall, but the fact that we made something that could make a wonderfully positive impact on the world makes us really happy. we also managed to make two different, equally efficient versions of our website despite many mistakes.

what we learned

we learned a lot about mobile app development (even if we didn't end up including it in our final project) as well as HTML. also that coding is really hard.

what's next?

we hope to next develop a mobile app version of "a soft space" that sends periodic and customizable push notifications gently reminding users to check in on themselves. we also hope to add more graphics both on our mobile app and to our websites, as well as significantly more resources to the web version, alongside features such as follow-along breathing exercises, a compliment generator, and journal entry areas to write out negative emotions, have the option to save it for oneself, and then watch the words vanish (bursting into flames, disappearing into the screen, having the virtual paper shred itself, etc). of course, these features require much more research particularly on CSS and Javascript. however, we're excited for this challenge because we hope to make "a soft space" as kind and encouraging as possible.
