Inspiration

Traditional education systems typically rely on a one-teacher-per-subject model, where a single educator assumes the responsibility of imparting knowledge and facilitating learning to innumerable students of diverse learning needs and systems. This conventional approach has been the cornerstone of educational institutions for centuries. This “hit or miss” method of matching students to incompatible teachers or teaching styles hinders students' holistic development and academic success. The widely accepted but increasingly questioned learning styles approach, which categorizes learners into visual, auditory, and kinesthetics preferences, has failed to provide substantial evidence of its effectiveness. Instead, it perpetuates a simplistic view of how individuals absorb and retain information, potentially limiting educational outcomes. Recognizing the inadequacies of the learning styles approach, an alternative solution emerges: providing students with access to multiple educators within each subject area. This shift allows for a more nuanced and personalized approach, accommodating the diverse learning preferences and needs of students. By offering varied teaching styles, perspectives, and expertise, this model not only fosters a deeper understanding of subject matter but also cultivates critical thinking skills and adaptability in learners.

What it does

SoonTM offers a multimodal approach to students in discovering different educators, teaching styles and learning resources. Students can pick subjects of interest then we compile multiple explanatory videos on the same topic but with different tutors or content creators and since they have different ways of explaining topic material, a student’s needs can be personalised and accommodated for. This is accompanied by the implementation of interactive graphics and simulations and a way to upload articles and practice questions that pertain to the same topic in order to offer a multimodal approach to students

How we built it

Brainstorming During the brainstorming stage, we initially delved into various strategies to integrate learning styles into our educational framework. Ideas ranged from developing tailored materials for each learning style to a performance tracker that suggested resources aligning with a style of learning. However, as we delved deeper into the research surrounding the efficacy of the learning styles approach, we encountered compelling evidence challenging its effectiveness. It became evident that relying solely on categorizing students into rigid learning styles did not align with the nuanced and complex nature of learning. We began exploring alternative solutions that would address the diverse learning needs of students more effectively. One idea that gained traction was the concept of providing students with access to multiple educators within each subject area.

Development During the development phase, we initially created an impromptu flow chart to outline the structure of our website. This served as a roadmap for construction. Subsequently, we constructed the website to align with this flow, ensuring a coherent user experience. Finally, thorough testing was conducted to verify that all components functioned as intended, refining the site to meet our goals effectively.

Challenges we ran into

Time constraints significantly impacted both the brainstorming and development stages of the project, imposing limitations on the depth of exploration and the refinement of ideas. In the brainstorming phase, the pressure to generate viable solutions within a limited timeframe sometimes led to premature decisions or overlooked alternatives. In addition, most of out team members had very little experience designing websites along with the varying features that were integral to the functioning of it/

Accomplishments that we're proud of

In reflecting on our achievements, we take pride in the completion of our project. Despite the challenges we faced, including navigating conflicting views and ideas in an open-ended group project, we successfully persevered and brought our vision to fruition. This accomplishment underscores our commitment, resilience, and ability to work collaboratively towards a common goal.

What we learned

In this project, we ventured into a new territory of group collaboration with an open-ended idea, which presented us with the challenge of reconciling conflicting views and ideas. Despite this challenge, we focused on creating a website centered around Teaching and Learning Styles. Through meticulous research, we delved deeply into our topic, gaining a comprehensive understanding that greatly informed our project. This experience not only enhanced our knowledge but also honed our teamwork and negotiation skills, preparing us for future challenges in our academic and professional endeavors.

What's next for soontm

Due to the limited time frame, we limited our scope to only accommodate for high school education topic although we have future plans to implement a more diverse set of courses that could be introduced for university level students.
