Inspiration

Inspired by conversations with NASA engineers and research into current space challenges, we were drawn to the pressing issue of orbital debris. Recognizing the potential contributions from casual astronomers and enthusiasts, we envisioned a platform where everyone can play a role in safeguarding space.

What It Does

Space Guard empowers casual astronomers to track and discover debris, aiding NASA in identifying potential hazards. With thousands of debris pieces orbiting Earth, it's impossible for NASA to monitor them all. Space Guard bridges this gap, providing critical data on untracked debris that might pose future risks.

How We Built It

  • Frontend: Built with Vite and React for a dynamic user experience.
  • Backend: Developed using Node.js and Express for efficient API handling.
  • Testing: Conducted using Postman to ensure smooth integration.
  • Database: Utilized MySQL, hosted on Azure Flexible SQL Database for scalable and secure data storage.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Integrating the database seamlessly with the front end.
  • Learning and implementing Tailwind CSS effectively.
  • Deepening our understanding of React to create a more interactive interface.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of

  • Successfully connecting a highly reactive backend to a responsive frontend.
  • Creating user-driven pages that adapt dynamically to input data.
  • Developing an engaging and meaningful project that addresses a real-world issue with a creative solution.

What We Learned

We realized the vast opportunities to protect Earth’s orbital environment and the importance of taking proactive steps. Ideating and bringing solutions to life can inspire the Artemis generation and broaden our collective horizons in space exploration.

What's Next for Space Guard

  • Integration with NASA Technology: Collaborating with NASA to make debris tracking accessible to the general public.
  • Advanced Trajectory Analysis: Partnering with experts in advanced mathematics and particle motion to refine debris flight path predictions.
  • Satellite Safety: Using validated data to help satellites navigate safely through debris fields, enhancing their longevity and functionality.
