Inspiration
During this hackathon, our team wanted to create something that truly sparked joy. While discussing things that made us smile, one of our teammates mentioned "Whatsapp Stickers." Just plain, cute, and silly stickers were enough to make him happy because it really showed that someone was thinking of him.
We wanted to take this a step further by allowing users to send stickers to their friend's computers while they browse the web. Even if your friend is away from their phone, they will be alerted to your sticker on their screen and continue to be motivated to do their tasks!
Our team truly had a blast creating this extension and will definitely be continuing to bother each other with stickers long after this hackathon :))
What it does
Sticky Send is a Google Chrome extension that lets friends send images (stickers) to each other that pop up directly in their browser. This turns browsing into a shared and interactive experience.
Users can: Send cute stickers or playful scare images to friends Receive images that appear instantly as pop-ups on any website AI-generate custom stickers using Google Gemini, turning text prompts into shareable images
How we built it
We built Sticky Send as a Chrome extension using:
- HTML/CSS/JavaScript for the UI and pop-ups
- Google Gemini to generate AI-powered stickers from user prompts
- Supabase to store image assets and handle real-time updates
Challenges we ran into
- How to build and deploy Chrome extensions with content scripts
- How to overlay modals on a diverse range of different websites
- Designing a user flow that felt intuitive and narrowing down our original ideas to become one cohesive project
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Our unique design and custom assets
- Integrating full-screen jump scares that truly shock the receiver
- Integrating authetication that allows users to connect with any of their friends on the web
What we learned
- Google Chrome has a lot of pop-up restrictions and we had to be very creative to get around these
- Communication is key in development and our project evolved when we listened to each other and optimized our work distribution
- Stickers really spark joy like nothing else
What's next for Sticky Send
- Creating the extension for other browers like firefox or Safari!
- Looking to add more features such as custom sound effects, more personalization features, and more advanced AI customization features.
- Possibly adding a recording feature that sends a reaction video back to the sender!
