Inspiration
Came from one of our teammates who has worked with children with disabilities
What it does
Our app's games are based on current therapy models and learning strategies that are employed in the real world, these games test and teach an individual's social skills and thinking process in social situations
How I built it
Using Android Studio, java we created 2 game modes: the first game uses Google's Natural Language API to simulate a conversation with the user; the second is a multiple-choice style game mode where the user has to guess the emotion of a presented character.
Our project implements a model-view-controller (MVC) strategy
Challenges
Developing a clean UI/UX was a challenge for the team as no one had experience in Front End Mobile design. This ended up eating the bulk of our time in the development process
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud of the fact that we as a team were able to pull together to get a clean and working UI/UX
What I learned
How to use predict emotion using natural language technology. Using Fragments in Android and adding animations.
What's next for StoryQuest:
Scalability is the name of the game; our app provides a framework that is kid-friendly, and expandable once professional behavioural therapists are able to provide input, both the quality (in terms of effectiveness in teaching) and quantity of the games will increase making the app more effective.
