Inspiration

The inspiration behind creating studyspot stemmed from a desire to facilitate a seamless connection between college students and optimal study environments within their respective campuses. Recognizing the importance of conducive spaces for academic productivity, our goal was to empower students with a tool that would help them discover and utilize reliable study spots. The vision was to enhance the overall learning experience by providing a platform that not only identifies suitable study spaces but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration among students. The aspiration was to create a resource that goes beyond conventional academic tools, contributing positively to the academic journey of college students.

What it does

Our interactive webapp provides an experience for students to 1) enter information about the status of their studying spot and 2) to retrieve information about the relative crowdedness/noise levels of different study spots around campus. Users input information including a picture of the location, ratings of crowd/noise, and name of location in the update location modal. After aggregating this information along with timestamps of data entry, studyspot presents the top study locations on the home page on the basis of low crowd/noise levels within a recent period of time. Images taken by the users will be displayed to give students visuals of the different study spots they may go to.

How we built it

We crafted the front end using Tailwind CSS, React, and Typescript to design the user interface. On the backend, MongoDB, Next.js, and Typescript store and manage data. GitHub facilitated seamless version control and collaboration.

Challenges we ran into

Engaging in this project was a gratifying learning experience, enabling us to acquire new technology skills on the fly. A couple of the hurdles we faced and overcame include:

  • Connecting to MongoDB for data storage
  • Integrating frontend and backend, overcoming issues
  • Navigating differences between component libraries and their defaults

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we developed and deployed a website built from ground up. Our skills as a team complemented each others well where we were able to lean on each other's respective skills to build an awesome hack.

What we learned

The process of developing studyspace was a great process of learning for all of our team members, where we had the opportunity to sharpen our skills in web development.

What's next for studyspot

Future plans for Studyspot include integrating a Pomodoro study timer to encourage prolonged study sessions. Social networking capabilities will be added to enhance user interaction and information sharing on the platform.
