Inspiration
Summary.io was inspired by how much virtual education has changed over the past years due to COVID-19. Due to classes now being recorded, students can easily watch their classes whenever they want. But end up having to pause the video to copy notes or write down the teacher's comments.
What it does
You can upload an mp4 or mp3 file and watch it along with the transcript. You can also upload your slides to be annotated, and even drag and drop the transcription onto the slides. Once done, you can export your annotated slides.
How we built it
Using React.js as our frontend and Assembly AI to transcribe the files.
Challenges we ran into
Our members were extremely inexperienced in React, JavaScript and REST APIs. A very accurate saying to explain our situation is we were learning to swim in a tsunami.
- Lucas: Struggled with the implementation of REST APIs
- Douglas: Everything
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We honestly didn't think we were able to get anything done after looking at the challenges. So being able to upload an mp4 video and transcribe it was quite the feat.
What we learned
- Lucas: Learned I really need to learn React, Node.js and REST APIs before trying to learn it in a 36h hackathon
- Douglas: How to connect backend, frontend, and POST requests
Built With
- assemblyai
- express.js
- react
