Inspiration
Credit Unions are non-profit and member-owned. We believe that using this benefit of credit unions over banks, credit unions can be an important character in leading industries towards environmentally friendly options. We gained inspiration from credit unions like University Credit Unions who is already supporting its local community, and also those who needs to stay afloat during this rapid digital age.
What it does
Sustainabiz is the solution that benefits all when it comes to supporting your local businesses in going green. Consumers like you and me can see a small list of local businesses that we might be interested in helping according to the sign up information we put in, and the point for businesses is to get a better eco-score as they improve in their business model, while gaining access to more funds and a larger consumer base. Sustainabiz makes sure that a consumer's money in the credit union is only ever being used to generate more revenue and funds to support the same business that you chose.
How we built it
Sustainabiz is built with Next.js, with an Appwrite background server, and realizing access control with Auth0. Both front end and back end of the webapp are hosted on two separate Azure resources. Our AI generated eco-score and suggestions are powered by Cohere API.
Challenges we ran into
Since eco-friendly businesses data available online are either proprietary or loosely documented, we have to come up with our own algorithm and rating system from scratch, meaning that this system is still extremely rudimentary, and extensive research and revision are necessary in the future if the system is to be adopted.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to coordinate the project so that everyone worked on a part that they are the most comfortable and interested in. For Mateo, it was the AI model training that he was absolutely thrilled to be embarking; for Jessica, it was the UI design iterations that transformed our rough planning into a detailed solution for the world to feast on; for Ian, it was the call for web development work that fuels his excitement and sense of accomplishment.
What we learned
Credit unions are rooted into the local soil deeply and stably, allowing them to accelerate the growth for under-appreciated small local business. We started this path knowing nothing about credit unions, and now, we are hoping the unmistakable potential we see in this business can propel credit unions into something that is more than just members and businesses, but to do it for the world.
What's next for SunstainaBIZ
Sunstainabiz still needs to undergo some major algorithmic and logistic overhaul, and it is absolutely lacking testing and training data for our AI model.
