Inspiration

As a kid, we were really fascinated by talking Tom and as an adult, we found VR to be something really cool. Hence, we decided to combine the two and create our project. We were really driven by the fact that we could bring certain simple characters to life using VR and we really wanted to delve into those possibilities. Our video demo will walk you through the process and what the filter does.

How we built it

Our first task was getting the 3-D figures. We found some inspiration on Maximo and used the figures from there. We then edited them and removed the matte textures to make the models lighter and more portable. The next task was to add audio patches and make the models come to life. We add pitch shifters to each character and use if-else logic to change the characters with screen taps and similarly change their voices with screen taps. The overall application used was Spark AR which really helped us control the program flow.

Challenges we ran into

There were many challenges that we ran into and we had to overcome in order to create the perfect submission. To begin with, as junior and senior undergraduate students, we had a lot of college work that we had to manage. All three of us are from different departments and had different schedules. We had to work remotely and efficiently to be able to complete the project on time. Secondly, most of us being fairly new to Spark AR, had to first learn the basics of program flow in Spark AR and then implement the project idea. There were times when we could not get a feature to work and it took some brainstorming and discussions and we were able to arrive at a solution.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud that we could learn and implement new technologies while balancing college classes which are very hectic as well. We were able to work efficiently in a team and figure out tapping, audio and other patches. We came up with many sequential and selection logics before finalizing the current model and executing it. We were dedicated, efficient and collaborative. The creativity just flowed after that.

What we learned

We began by learning 3D modelling and Spark AR workflow. We figured out the concepts behind AR and VR as well as the key differences. We learnt how to effectively work in a team and remotely manage project and ideas. We indulged in healthy discussions and really understood what teamwork is all about. By the end, we were able to identify what distinguishes a good project from a bad one and how we can execute an amazing idea!
