Inspiration
Coming from agricultural roots, I hear the troubles that farmers go through to ensure that food production is not damaged. Right now the farmers are most effected, and if not slowed Climate Change will cause food supply issues for everyone. My inspiration for this project is to stop that from happening
What it does
Provides information in a succinct manner while implementing an AI Image Analysis software in order to identify items that are composed within the user's image upload. Essentially, allows the user to input an image and displays the carbon footprint of the item in the image. Massive developments coming soon (Crowdsourcing, LocationBasedInfo, etc.)
How we built it
We created the webpage using the Django Framework and: -Python -HTML -CSS -Javascript
We created the database and accessed the information with -SQL
We completed the Image Analysis AI with -Python -ImageAi Module
Challenges we ran into
The greatest challenges we ran into were the following:
-The website was not loading poperly when it was published to the remote server. It took a while to overcome this issue.
-The database was not lining up with the names from the image analysis script. This was solved by implementing a simple naming convention to the database entries!
-The current live server build of the website does not have working image analysis because the storage for the AI reference information and module was too much to be included in the FREE plan. This feature is shown working in the video and the implementation is shown in the github. Please do explore the other pages and design of the Terra Salus Website!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Design: One of the greatest fortes of Terra Salus is the appealing design and theme of the website and the video
-Accessibility: Since Terra Salus is a live website, it is accessible by anyone with an internet connection or data plan
-Applicability: Climate Change is the next threat to our generation, and Terra Salus is part of the solution. With Climate Change becoming more of a threat each day, We hove to grow our community of supporters to make a meaningful difference in the fight against climate change.
What we learned
-Incorporating complicated backend scripts creeates even more challenges when trying to upload and run the website from the live server. We figure it out in the end!
-Design is IMPORTANT. In order to create a group of dedicated supporters, we need to catch their attention. I believe our beautiful website does just that!
-Finally, We learned that research is time consuming. It took us several hours just to get and insure the date we are posting on the site is accurate!
What's next for Terra Salus
-Currently, Terra Salus is limited by it's database of images/items. We are working on moving the project to a crowdsourcing platform so that many people can contribute to the project's database. There will be several checks in place to make sure the data is accurate.
-Uploading to a website is convenient, but we are trying to create a mobile app to pair with the Terra Salus website where User's can take the live feed from their cameras and identify objects and recieve environmental informations for the items detected in their camera feed!
