Trip-3d

A little story from the main creator: When I was in 4th grade, I dreamed of exploring the world, particularly traveling to the equator. Since then I believe remote work and digital entrepreneurship would become popular. Opening the door to working one place while living in another which enables leveraging geo-arbitrage, exploring while working and "passport bro" dating etc. It is time to make a dream a reality!!! - Darcy Liu

Inspiration

Trip-3d is the ultimate app for digital nomads in the 21st century.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revolutionized the way we work, proving that remote work is not just possible but often preferable. Why be confined to an office when you can work from anywhere, at any time?

If you own a digital business and have the means to travel, why not work while exploring the world? Experience different cultures to stimulate new ideas, savor diverse cuisines, and broaden your horizons. Trip-3d is the tool designed for digital nomads who want to feel comfortable and prepared for their next adventure in a foreign place. With Trip-3d, you can digitally scout an area before visiting, turning potential stress into exciting exploration.

Have you ever dreamed of living as a nomad? Trip-3d is here to make that dream a reality.

What it does

Trip-3d is a comprehensive tool for digital nomads to scout their next destination before visiting. Our platform allows users to:

  • Explore the landscape in 3D
  • Discover tourist attractions
  • Locate and evaluate co-working spaces
  • Find accommodation options
  • Visualize public transportation routes
  • Check local weather patterns

By providing this information, Trip-3d transforms the unknown into an adventure, replacing stress with excitement and preparedness.

How we built it

Trip-3d is built using a robust and modern tech stack:

  • Backend: Django framework
  • Frontend: Bootstrap JS for responsive design
  • Maps: Google 3D Maps Platform for immersive location exploration
  • Data Visualization: Cufflinks for temperature and other data overlays

Challenges we ran into

  1. Initial Concept Pivot: We originally envisioned an urban land evaluation app showcasing revenue per acre overlaid on a 3D city model. However, we couldn't access the necessary data from Urban3 for a hackathon project.

  2. Backend Selection: We initially considered using React but found it challenging to integrate with certain libraries. The abundance of plain HTML and JavaScript documentation for Google's libraries led us to choose Django as our backend.

  3. Map Marker Placement: Implementing and optimizing the placement of noted markers on the 3D map proved to be technically challenging.

  4. Data Visualization: Integrating Cufflinks for temperature and other data overlays required significant effort to ensure smooth performance.

  5. Transportation Overlay: Obtaining and accurately displaying public transportation routes for foreign countries presented both data acquisition and technical implementation challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Mastering Django: We successfully learned and implemented a Django backend, expanding our skillset.

  2. Bootstrap Integration: We effectively used Bootstrap JS to create a responsive and visually appealing frontend.

  3. 3D Map Implementation: We successfully integrated and customized the Google 3D Maps Platform for our specific use case.

  4. Digital Nomad Solution: We've taken the first step in providing a comprehensive solution for digital nomads, addressing a real-world need in the post-pandemic era.

What we learned

  1. Versatility in Web Development: We discovered that React and Next.js aren't always necessary for creating powerful web applications. Django can be an excellent choice for certain projects.

  2. 3D Map Integration: We gained valuable experience in working with 3D mapping technologies and their integration into web applications.

  3. Data Visualization Techniques: Through our work with Cufflinks, we learned advanced data visualization techniques for web applications.

  4. User-Centric Design: We learned the importance of designing with the end-user (in this case, digital nomads) in mind, addressing their specific needs and pain points.

What's next for Trip-3d

  1. Enhanced Data Integration: We plan to incorporate more data sources to provide even more comprehensive information about potential destinations.

  2. Community Features: Implement user accounts, reviews, and forums to create a community of digital nomads who can share experiences and advice.

  3. Mobile App Development: Create iOS and Android apps to make Trip-3 accessible on-the-go.

  4. AI-Powered Recommendations: Implement machine learning algorithms to provide personalized destination recommendations based on user preferences and past travels.

  5. Partnerships: Collaborate with co-working space providers, accommodation services, and local tourism boards to offer exclusive deals to Trip-3d users.

  6. Offline Mode: Develop functionality for users to download city data for offline use during travel.

  7. Augmented Reality Features: Integrate AR capabilities to allow users to visualize information overlaid on their real-world environment when they arrive at their destination.

Trip-3d is just getting started on its mission to empower digital nomads. Join us on this exciting journey of exploration and remote work revolution!
