Inspiration

We live in a time where many understand the need for diversity in their media consumption, yet don’t know where to start. Furthermore, short-form content spurred on by social media only incentivizes short-lasting connections, rather than fulfilling, sustainable experiences. Our inspiration for TurnLeaf was creating an application that guided readers towards amplifying diversity in their reading as well as facilitated users’ creation of groups to experience these books together

What it does

TurnLeaf was conceptualized with two essential principles:

Diversity: With automatically generated reading statistics based on the user’s reading history, TurnLeaf will display these numbers in graphs in the user’s profile in order to remind them to be cognizant of which types of stories and authors they might be missing out on. On its Explore Page, TurnLeaf will also use these statistics to recommend certain books that both align with the reader’s noted preferences as well as fill gaps in their current reading diversity. TurnLeaf will also spotlight marginalized/lesser-known books on its Explore Page seasonally, whether by seasonal heritage/pride months or current social trends.

Community:

By giving users the ability to easily create Book Clubs, TurnLeaf emphasizes creating a longer-lasting connection with those interested in the same media as you by allowing you to enjoy the reading experience together, no matter how far you are. Your reading speed won’t make you miss out on anything! Progress-locked comments on each page of the book will allow you to see what your friend thought of any plot twist or heart-wrenching scene. TurnLeaf will also recommend you a selection of books tailored to you and your reading buddies based on how high you rated the book you read together.

How we built it

We built the visuals for TurnLeaf with Figma. We started to use Firebase to create a user authentication database but unfortunately ran out of time.

Challenges we ran into

Our primary issue was the time constraint. We wanted to code the user authentication service using Firebase, but were unable to implement it before the deadline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Seeing that this is all our first Hackathon, we were proud of ourselves for both coming up with an app concept based on the prompt as well as using Figma for the first time.

What we learned

We learned how to create a mockup of an app's visual and UI in Figma.

What's next for TurnLeaf

We hope to finish the user authentication system, as well as add a reading goal and preference survey, in order to allow users to create a fully fleshed profile.
