Inspiration

Have you ever spent hours scrolling through travel blogs, Google Maps reviews, and Reddit threads, trying to plan the perfect trip? Or maybe you've followed a generic itinerary only to realize halfway through that it doesn't match your vibe at all?

We've all been there. The problem with existing trip planners is that they either offer rigid, one-size-fits-all recommendations or require you to do all the heavy lifting yourself. We wanted to create something different—a travel companion that actually gets you.

Our inspiration came from three key insights:

Everyone travels differently: Some people want adventure-packed days, others prefer leisurely mornings at cafés. Current tools don't adapt to your unique travel personality.
The planning paradox: We spend so much time planning trips that we forget to enjoy them. What if AI could handle the logistics while you focused on the excitement?
Lost memories: How many times have you looked back at a trip and couldn't remember which restaurant had that amazing pasta or what that historic building was called? We wanted to make memory preservation effortless.

We also drew inspiration from apps like Beli (for food recommendations) and Sidechat (for community engagement), imagining what a travel app would look like if it had their personalization and social DNA.

What It Does

Unserious is your intelligent travel companion that takes you from "I want to visit somewhere" to "I have the perfect itinerary" in minutes, then helps you capture and share every moment.

Core Workflow:

1. Tell Us About Your Trip Simply describe your travel plans in natural language—destination, dates, where you're staying, budget constraints, dietary restrictions, and any specific preferences. No rigid forms, just conversation.

2. We Learn Your Vibe Through an interactive "This or That" interface, you choose between activity pairs (e.g., "Museum tour or beach day?", "Fine dining or street food?"). This helps our AI understand whether you're an adventure seeker, culture enthusiast, foodie, or relaxation lover.

3. Discover Personalized Activities Our Gemini-powered system searches the web for activities that match your constraints and preferences, presenting you with curated options. Swipe through events, marking what interests you and what doesn't.

4. Get Your Perfect Itinerary Based on your selections, we generate an optimized day schedule that balances timing, location proximity, and your energy levels. Want to adjust it? Just use natural language: "Move dinner to 8pm" or "Add more outdoor activities."

5. Live Your Trip & Capture Memories As you experience each activity, take photos and add notes. The app uses image metadata to verify you're at the right location and automatically compiles everything into a beautiful scrapbook.

6. Share Your Adventure Publish your itinerary to the community! Other travelers can follow your exact route, adapt it to their preferences, or simply get inspired. Follow other travelers to discover hidden gems through authentic experiences.

Special Features:

Brown University Community Hub: Students can share local Providence recommendations, creating a curated guide by students, for students.
Intelligent Profile Building: Over time, the system learns your travel patterns and personality, offering increasingly personalized recommendations.
Social Discovery: Find travelers with similar interests, follow their adventures, and get itinerary recommendations based on what people like you enjoyed.

Community Growth:

We envision Unserious becoming the go-to platform for authentic travel experiences. Not influencer-curated, not algorithm-optimized for clicks, but genuinely built from the collective wisdom of real travelers.

The Brown University pilot is just the beginning. We want to expand to campuses nationwide, then globally, creating hyperlocal travel communities everywhere.
