Inspiration

We were inspired by our favorite visual novel games like Omori and Undertale. We also thank our Academy of Loudon alumni friends Mira Khan and Lanah Pheng for inspiration and guidance.

What it does

Vendetta Rouge, an eerie time traveling story that is centered around the protagonist Colette. Through venturing backwards through time, she is able to reconcile with her grief as well as find a new purpose in life.

How we built it

This project was developed using Unity and C# for gameplay mechanics and scene transitions, with Visual Studio Code as the primary development environment. Unity's built-in systems for dialogue, animation, and UI were key in creating an immersive visual novel experience. As for art and visual assets, two of our team members diligently worked in IbisPaint X and Adobe Photoshop to create beautiful visuals that really brought the entire project to life. All of the assets were ported into Unity using Unity's UI system, which allowed for seamless integration of interactive and static elements within the project.

Challenges we ran into

During the development of the game, we ran into many varieties of challenges spanning all the way from story writing to UI scaling. When it came to the technical aspect, the proper integration of UI elements within Unity became a struggle because of the sheer amount of layers that were used. We also ran into issues with the progression system not allowing the player to correctly progress through the game, which caused a major headache for quite some time.

We had a hard time finding the balance in time to make artwork. This made some of the artwork appear rushed, however we think we were able to deal with this issue by creating a few high quality art works that made the rest of the game look more finished.

Additionally, the music was not an easy task to make because it was not easy to line up the parts and it was a struggle to fit the correct mood of music.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As a team, we are collectively proud of the amount of content we were able to pack into a project that took a little under 30 hours of effort. We are also very proud of the splitting of jobs, as we all worked relatively equally on the project.

What we learned

After spending hours working within such a time constraint, each team member learned a unique lesson about teamwork and balancing workloads efficiently. Our developer especially learned a lot about how to easily read from JSON files to make a modular Visual Novel algorithm that allowed for easy import of text and images as portraits. During the audio design portion, he also discovered many new way to effectively splice the audio files to respond to game events.

What's next for Vendetta Rouge

While we currently do not have any future plans of development for Vendetta Rouge, this project inspired us to work on new things such as experimental art forms, new games, and more musical projects.
