We are an initiative that has the goal of providing hospitals in Europe with the latest information & equipment necessary to perform ventilator splitting as an off-label use in case there are more patients that need intubation than ventilators available.
The original concept comes from Charlene Babcock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uClq978oohY&t=1s
There are already similar projects out there that provide ad-hoc solutions to ventilator shortages: https://www.prismahealth.org/vesper/
Italy and US are using this method right now: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/26/health/coronavirus-ventilator-sharing.html
We assume that European hospitals lack the necessary material for ventilator splitting, as ventilators are not meant to be used in this way.
Our goal is to:
1) make the possibility of ventilator splitting public in European hospitals and share best practices through our upcoming website
2) sensitize medical equipment manufacturers to the possible increase of demand for T-tubes, connectors and tubes
3) provide hospitals with the necessary knowledge to print the material themselves, and
4) identify manufacturing capacities to secure a decentralized production and supply of the necessary material.
We already have partnerships with several manufacturers and 3D-printers.
We all hope that doctors do not need to fall back to this solution of last resort - but we aim to equip them with all that would be needed. This is a low-cost solution that might save lives.
