Inspiration

Over the winter break, Eric’s dad tasked him with a challenge: given a composite figure of rectangles, calculate the area of the figure. This would’ve saved his father lots of time in not only calculating, but also verifying that the answer was correct. So, as part of TAMUhack 2022, Austin Dynamics fulfilled Eric’s dad’s dream, with much more than the initial scope of the project.

What it does

Vertech calculates the area of a composite rectangular figure with ease, and it can both teach how to calculate them (by giving random prompts) and a feature to upload figures of your own.

How we built it

Using a LOT of Python and time :)

Challenges we ran into

We originally wanted to calculate the area of odd shapes, such as shapes with slopes and organic shapes. However, this proved to be very difficult and we were only able to calculate the area of shapes with no square corners. Working with Tkiner was also difficult since we had limited experience in it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to make a working prototype of what this application should look like. It can calculate the area for weird shapes and even some randomized shapes. We were able to make

What we learned

A LOT of Python and Tkinter commands

What's next for Vertech

We are looking to give help prompts in the Vertech window, and to be able to calculate more complex figures (such as composite figures with triangles or even circles)!
