Inspiration
Watching videos in the modern day is simply too inconvenient. They must be downloaded beforehand if you have no internet connection, they take up storage space, they force you to follow the story at the pace of the video, they fatigue your eyes with blue light, and they require earbuds when watching videos in public. On the other hand, manga takes up significantly less storage, does not need earbuds to be enjoyed in public, causes less eye strain, and can be read at your own pace. Therefore, in an effort to make entertainment more accessible for everyone, our group decided to create anime2manga.
What it does
This tool splits input mp4 files (video) and outputs a manga comic strip of highlights that effectively conveys the story of the video.
How we built it
The tech stack that we utilized while developing this project involved python and fast-api for the back-end, and react (javascript) for the front-end.
Challenges we ran into
We really struggled to get manga-like coloring and features on the frames to work as intended. It took lots of time and effort to fine tune and perfect the final visual effects.
What we learned
We learned how to coordinate as a team, manage a GitHub repository as a group, and navigate different branches.
What's next for video2manga
Firstly, we could implement more dynamic text bubbles and frame sizes within panels. We could incorporate this service in various social media: for example, scrolling instagram reels would be much more interesting with video2manga as an active extension to convert said reels into manga strips. We could also build a mobile application to increase user accessibility to this service.
