Inspiration
The global travel industry is a 7.6 billion dollar industry. With consumers spending so much money on vacation, they want to ensure that their experience will be perfect. Planning a vacation, however, is often frustrating, forcing users to navigate dozens of articles, maps, photos, and reviews before they book. We wanted to take the stress out of vacation planning by allowing users to get a taste of a recommended vacation in an intuitive, interactive, and fun UI. Enter VirtuvisoR.
What?
VirtuvisoR takes the stress out of vacation planning. A user needs only to tell us were they want to go, and we bring them their. Using the Google Maps and TripAdvisor APIs, we find the most popular attractions at their dream destination and drop them there in a photosphere.
How?
We built an Android app using the Google Maps API and the TripAdvisor API to translate a destination wish into global coordinates and query the top attractions there, get the location coordinates of the top attraction, and drop them there in a Google Maps Streetview panorama.
Challenges
We initially wanted to build an app that leveraged the Oculus GearVR to provide the most immersive user experience possible. However, after several hours of setbacks, we decided to abandon this line to focus on a clean user experience in the app.
Accomplishments
We built a fully-functional Android app despite the fact that most of our members have no experience in Android, Java, or hackathons!
What we learned
We learned how to plan application development, program for Android, find documentation quickly, and solve complex, dynamic problems.
What's next for VirtuvisoR
Integration with the Oculus GearVR! Now that we have a fully-functional app, we can focus all our energy on bringing a more immersive user experience to our product.
