Inspiration
Turo and a desire to make the ever evolving range of water sport equipment more accessible to anyone. Nothing spends more idle time being unused than boats... except jet skis. Owning either is a perfect avenue to earning some passive income with a mechanism that can neatly set up borrowing situations.
What it does
Connects Owners of water crafts and their toys with Renters
How we built it
First we created somewhat of a prototype with flutterFlow. We then switched to CRA for more flexibility.
Challenges we ran into
Calendar sharing is not where it needs to be for us to be able to solely rely on flutterFlow. Luckily it was clear early on that flutterFlow could not do the job itself. So switching to CRA was one challenge. Another was keeping the User, that can be both Renters or Owners at any given time, labelled and identified as the role they are playing within the app: Owner or Renter. You can own a boat and rent it out while at the same time, renting a paddle board. It was tricky but we conquered it! Another difficulty we ran into was getting the square API to recognize VISA card payments. But once we figured out Mastercard, VISA was easy to incorporate.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of our ability to completely clone an existing model and turn it into a fully functional app within a month. We have never made such a complete project, let alone one that is production-ready. We are also proud of the incorporation of Apple Pay.
We are most proud that we set a hefty goal for ourselves just over a month ago and, from our vantage, crushed our objective. We love what we made and, more importantly, think others will too!
What we learned
We learned that we can make whatever is on our minds. We knew we were decent at coding and knew we could use Chat GPT to accomplish a lot of task but we turned it up a notch for this project. We used Claude for a lot of the coding and Chat GPT for a lot of debugging. We are masters of AI prompts. We also learned how to make seemless P2P payments and incorporate Apple Pay!
What's next for WakeHorse
We will create a React Native app most likely. We will shop around for funding in Chicago to accomplish this. We want to grow our team and, like Turo, specifically chose a limited amount of bodies of water to get the ball rolling. This has the ability to cultivate a community in ways I cannot explain. The amount of "toys" out on lake is growing. Most of them are expensive. I have been the little kid that wants to ride a wakeboard behind a legitimate wakeboard boat and not been able to... because they are expensive. Not anymore. Fun for all. My goal, and one of my largest driving motivators... is to ride a Jet Surf again. I WILL RENT A JETSURF IN THIS APP OR BUST! :)
