Inspiration
From Anusha: In my training as a certified nursing aid, I saw many people suffering from joint pain. My heart ached for them. Certified nursing aids need to be adaptive, so I decided to use my hacking skills to create a solution.
What it does
Pain is bad. Our project aims to provide palliative care to those with severe inflammatory joint conditions like gout, which is a type of arthritis, and peripheral neuropathy, which is the damage to nerves. To address symptoms of gout, our app will serve as an alternative to the expensive option of vibration therapy—all with the technology of a common android phone. Press the play button to begin the process for our android vibration therapy. After confirming your settings by selecting a type (Anteater, Capybara, etc.) of vibration setting, the vibrations will automatically begin. Press the pause button to end the session. With Wavelet, a user can create a custom vibration to massage their inflamed joints.
For those that suffer from joint or nerve pain, it is essential to monitor one’s water intake. Wavelet’s computer-vision powered water log is an excellent choice for this. A user can use technology to scan their cup of water, and Wavelet will log their water intake. When you click into the interface, you can view your log of water intake on the bottom and add new entries on the top. After clicking the button, you will receive a prompt for your camera to scan the edges of your drinking implement. Place your drinking implement a handspan away from the camera (6-7 inches, or the length of a human hand in the shape of our logo). Once you place the red dots indicating the edges of the cup, you will then be taken to a draggable interface to adjust water level based on your measurements. Our computer-vision based program will then determine how much water was in the cup.
Joint diseases are usually psychosomatic, so we hope that our app could provide some relief to those that could benefit from our technology.
How we built it
Our project is created on Android Studio. We used mobile development concepts such as fragments and a camera to put together an app with multiple functions.
Challenges we ran into
Implementing the coordinate system for our computer-vision based camera was a completely new realm of doing. Also, we had to do many things as a two-person group.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our idea was a very cool pitch, and we are happy to have realized progress with it.
What we learned
We familiarized ourselves with many Android Studio functions over the course of making this app.
