What's inside the egg?

— a curiosity-driven collaborative puzzle to crack Sustainability!

Inspiration

Did you know that the biggest meme on Instagram is... an egg? Mystery is powerful! Did you also know that Buzzfeed, the famous quiz platform, uses people's answers to build preference profiles and do market research? We created "WHUAT!?" — an AI-fueled mobile game that engages you with questions and keeps you hooked on a mystery object, helping the user find out more about their preferences and helping companies understand what their customers value most.

To top it off, we picked a "burning" topic after the recent heatwaves and extreme weather: environmental sustainability. Hopefully, with "WHUAT!?", our little Egg friend can nudge both customers and businesses a little closer to making our world the place we all want to live in...

WHUAT!? is it

We offer an AI-based game and market research platform in the shape of an egg that generates questions for the player community. The questions are like gamified personality tests to make it more engaging and rewarding for the players. All players make progress together: there's only 1 egg for everybody. This creates a community effect, where you can see how much progress everybody together is making.

After enough questions have been answered, the egg will crack! and players will learn a bit more about themselves and their relationship with sustainable consumption. The company will be able to create campaigns that last for a specific duration during which customers can log in and respond to questions and unlock rewards. At the end of the campaign the final prize will be revealed and the player rewards will be awarded either directly or through a sweepstake.

The questions are dynamically produced by generative AI. In fact, we can easily adapt this game to a topic other than Sustainable Purchaces! You give us a topic, and we spend 2h cooking up a new AI generation routine. Similarly, the player profiles with their sustainability preferences are also produced by generative AI.

Gamification

We reward users as they answer questions. There are several rewards available which are gradually unlocked both by the user and the community. The business will be able to select a time period for the competition to take place and questions will be dynamically generated by an AI during this time.

Safety and content moderation

The platform has an admin dashboard which contain up-to-date analytics and the current question database. The admin can open the question database and review and block questions if needed. We also plan to use automatic content moderation to filter questions as they are generated.

What's inside the egg...

Solution architecture diagram

We made a Progressive Web App (PWA) and we hosted the solution on DigitalOcean servers.

-> challenges!

There's never enough time to make everything. Our egg was meant to have more animations, and start talking when it cracks open. We were missing a UX specialist in the team and some of us tried on new hats 🎩 ChatGPT also has a lot of wrinkles in real-time apps with its aggressive rate limiting. We can't make many profiles at once.

-> learnings!

Coordinating an impromptu team is going to have some rough edges and there's skill gaps that we need to fill in. We learned that we can do it!

Hatching the Egg

We want to collaborate with a company that can take the Egg to the next level. We have plenty of ideas for branding, surprises and AI-tuning that we can't wait to unleash in a full prototype of "WHUAT!?". Our endgame is to make more "skins" of the game, asking the difficult questions with crowdsourced, fun opinion polls, to tackle society's biggest challenges. Think privacy preferences, climate change, or acceptable uses of AI.
