Inspiration
With tuition costs on the rise, students are looking for part time jobs to make ends meet or merely just support themselves. However, owing to a plethora of constraints, university students need a job that falls right in their Goldilocks Zone. According to a poll conducted by the Guardian, 45% of students have a part time job in the United States and in all likelihood this figure would rise in the coming years. Xperience empowers this massive student community by enabling them to rate their part time jobs on several crucial metrics like flexible timings, timely wages and work environment among others. We believe this democratizes the process for the students and helps them find the right jobs for them so that they can better support themselves.
What it does
This platform enables the student to scout for part time jobs that fit their requirements. All a student has to do is search for the company he or she wishes to join, our platform will then present them with reviews from ex-employees that worked in that company in recent years. The reviews would contain some standardized rubrics like the ones mentioned above and the reviewers own personal experience (if any) outside of the said rubrics. The student can then choose whether or not they should take that job or search for some other work. Since all of this happens instantaneously this saves the student a lot of time and optimizes the scouting process for them.
How we built it
We used Chakra UI for front end development to create more interactive, scalable, responsive and aesthetic web pages. We used Figma to streamline our designing process and also to help us collaborate more easily. We used node and express for backend development and used MongoDB as our primary DataBase Management System (DBMS). Our entire platform was made using REACT a javascript framework .
Challenges we ran into
Since our entire team is composed of new members we faced a lot of hurdles along the road. We had to scan the internet for syntaxes and tools to get a head start. The gist is that things weren’t simple however, we enjoyed this journey to Xperience and learned a lot from it. When it came to building the website, I met a few problems in the Bootstrap Javascript library leading to me needing to use custom Javascript to power the navigation bar for mobile devices adding to development time. And we faced some problems while rendering out our show page where the user can see all the reviews .
Our Accomplishments
We are extremely proud of how we collaborated and helped each other to create a fantastic platform in just a weekend. All of us ran into new barriers but were quick to overcome them and get things working by helping each other which was great.
What we learned
Throughout the hackathon I developed a greater knowledge of the variety of tools available for web development like Chakra UI. I also started to familiarize myself with Node.js, Figma and REACT overall this has been a great learning experience for me. — Samyak Parashar
Throughout the whole of this hackathon I developed greater knowledge of Javascript, a language I had previously not been very comfortable with at all and used node.js to develop Xperience. I also learned to think critically and quickly to produce a product and solve unpredictable problems that cropped up along the way, I learned how to approach a problem and solve it — Satyam Singh
This hackathon (being my first one) really helped me get more confident on my skills in frontend (before this I wouldn't have imagined to make an idea a reality within a day!), I also chose to go beyond my comfort zone and learn how to use a new frontend framework which seemed promising for the frontend of our project. Overall, I learnt that anything can be achievable if you really want to achieve it! -Debanshi Todi
I utilized Figma, HTML , CSS and JavaScript to design and implement pages on the site. -Joyce
What’s next for Xperience
Currently our platform offers part time job reviews from only one city and for a limited number of companies. Owing to its dynamic usecase Xperience is a very scalable platform, one which has the potential to span multiple countries and serve hundreds of thousands of University students if not millions. The number of companies, the roles offered in their outlets and the number of people reviewing said roles would naturally expand into a massive community capable of catering to a plethora of demands. We also want to incorporate verification features into this platform to make it more reliable.
