Inspiration
The initial concept for our game was an avoidance theme. Players would enter the ready room and, after a brief waiting period, be transported into the arena. Here, they would need to evade incoming enemies to survive as long as possible.
However, this proved challenging in a VR environment, prompting us to pivot our approach. Midway through the competition, Meta introduced a sample project called Chop n’ Pop. We utilized this to redefine our game as a collection-based experience with slower and less threatening adversaries.
How we built it
DryCoast developed a sophisticated lobby or social space outside of the main play area, incorporating a collection zone with innovative vertical elements. Cereal was tasked with programming the game mechanics.
Challenges we ran into
One of our major challenges was scaling down our vision to fit within the constraints of world capacity. It was both challenging and intriguing to maximize detail in prioritized areas while adhering to these limitations.
Shortly before submission, we discovered that some assets within the Horizon Worlds library could not be used within a primitive world. This lead to a last minute scramble to remove all of the offending meshes (a few hundred), and replace the zombie asset with a primitive replacement.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We take pride in having successfully integrated custom mechanics into our game world. This project marks our first comprehensive endeavor into Horizon Worlds, and ultimately, we succeeded in incorporating our own unique gameplay elements.
What's next for Scavengers
The primary focus of all our games is the player's impact. Our objective is to enhance the direct influence players have on the world, allowing them to feel as though they are actively shaping the environment as they play. With additional time, we would concentrate on providing players with options that enhance the experience both for themselves and others in the game. Examples include unlocking new areas or benefits that apply to all players. Similarly, global challenges could be introduced, enabling the community to collectively achieve goals.
