I've been meaning to post for a while to let interested people know what's up with me.

This is not that post.

This is the post about my new computer. It came up in conversation where I was chatting and a number of people asked for reviews.

My personal laptop (a 2012 MacBook Pro 13") has been in desperate need of a replacement for a long time. For the past year or so, I've been getting along by using C---- & [personal profile] marius23's cast-off MacBook Airs as hot backups. ("This computer has just ground to a halt. I'll use the one next to it on my desk while it shuffles the bits and catches up." or "This computer's mini DisplayPort just flaked out - I'll use this other computer instead of rebooting." And so forth.)

I investigated various Apple & linux possibilities while making my choice. (I used linux before I used MacOs, and I've been using MacOs for a long time.) I decided not to buy a new Mac because I'm tired of computer updates that require me to authenticate with an outside source. I might have bought a Dell - I'm really happy that mainstream computer companies are supporting linux as an option and if their website had not made it such a PITA to filter their laptop offerings by "available with linux" they might have earned my purchase. There are a bunch of companies that sell laptops with linux pre-loaded, and some even offer a choice of distros. The challenge was in finding one in the US. Many of these companies had really good-looking laptops, but were on another continent. If there is an issue with the laptop, I don't want to have to ship it back to The Netherlands.

Eventually, I came across Juno Computers. They are based in London, UK, but they build and ship US computers out of NJ. While I was poking at the choices and options, Giovanni was available on the website chat and was a great help. Additionally I was shopping during the Cyber Monday sale, but the website ended the sale prices early due to some glitch. Giovanni had signed off for the night, but I was still able to leave him a message and he fixed the website issue so that I got the sale price. I eventually ended up selecting a Juno Computers Jupiter 14" V4 laptop, with the base i5 processor, 32GB of RAM, and the 512GB of SSD storage. It will have Ubuntu 20.04 on it.

So, how do I like my new computer? I don't know. They're in the process of building it and getting it to me. I'll let y'all know about it when it shows up.
We've all got them. That collection of random leftover hardware from past projects, saved because "it will be useful someday". Well, that day is here!

Yesterday I repaired my bicycle with a screw that needed to be just the right diameter and length, and have an aggressive screw incline (no machine screws need apply). Saved myself the extra hour or so that running out to the hardware store would have cost me.
The Dreamwidth logo is disturbingly similar to the Debian logo.
