have a question on making extracts from herbs for smoking/consumption. One particular herb I want to work with (Wild Lettuce) has chemicals in it that are volatile, so everything that I've read says to avoid using heat as an extraction method as the chemicals from the plant would be gone. Some articles I've read on the net recomend using just water and letting it steap for a day without any heat added, then letting the water evaporate and using what is left after it evaporates. Another article which went more in depth in some ways recomended using 91% isopropyl alchohol (rubbing alchohol), letting it soak in that for a day, straining, then repeating the process with the remainer of the herbs another 1 to 2 times followed by once with water, then allowing it to evaporate, using what's left. This sounds good, apart from how long it takes, and the isopropyl alchohol. rubbing alchohol is poisinous! is it volatile enough that the rubbing alchohol will evaporate and you wouldn't be in danger of poisining yourself if you were smoking the extract/resin that's left after that method? I know that alchohol has a high boilining point but still a little apprehensive. Anyone have any experience with using either method for any herbs to be smoked or eaten or know of the safety? |
