What is your favorite foreign film? Do you think there should be an American remake?
i have issues with anything non-hollywood or non-english being called "foreign." i understand it's a convenient term, but as a non-american whose first language isn't english, i'm offended.
that said, i'm usually against remixing classics, but it's an exercise in creativity, too; adaptations are one way of getting moviegoers involved in cultures that are not their own. if you're an artist, it's also a way to express your admiration for an existing work - and besides, royalties. remakes mean more money and exposure all around for the original non-hollywood artists and production outfits.
however, i really can't recall a hollywood remake i'm happy with, and i cringe at the very idea of my favorite non-hollywood films being remade (as much as i respect spike lee, am really not looking forward to his upcoming rendition of
oldboy). the massively awesome
sigaw being turned into
the echo probably doesn't count because it was "remade" by the same director. i'm reluctant to support an industry that turns out poor copies of already great stuff, just for the sake of sales - but i don't suppose there's any way to make that immoral.
i remember ranting about remakes in an earlier lj post a few years ago. i think i might want to take it all back if i ever get around to finding and reading it again. i've become more tolerant about things like this, in my old age.

speaking of original movies, please do consider supporting this independent film.
the talented sister-thing called my attention to it, so we downloaded the first part, watched it and really enjoyed it. my only complaint is that the first part - the only part out so far - is only 20 minutes long, but I think that just means the next installment is well worth waiting for.
