What I Wish Every Autism Mom Knew
Not books to read. Not complicated theories. Just the most important ideas—presented simply.
6 Ideas That Change Everything
These are the foundational concepts that guide my work with 1,000+ families. Understand them, and you'll have an advantage over 90% of parents.
The Gut-Brain Axis
đź’ˇ 70-80% of serotonin (the "calm & happy" neurotransmitter) is made in the gut, not the brain.
Why This Matters
This is why children with chronic gut issues often have mood, behavior, and focus problems. Fix the gut, support the brain.
Take Action
Try: Minimize snacking between meals and add a high-quality digestive enzyme with meals. When we eat constantly, the gut never rests—and proper digestion requires breaks. Enzymes help break down food more completely, reducing gut irritation and improving nutrient absorption.
Food as Information
💡 Food doesn't just provide energy—it sends signals to your child's genes, immune system, and brain.
Why This Matters
Artificial colors, preservatives, and processed foods can trigger inflammation and behavioral changes in sensitive children. It's not about being "picky"—it's biochemistry.
Take Action
Try: For 2 weeks, feed your child only fresh, organic vegetables and fruit plus water—and avoid sugar and all processed foods. This isn't about restriction; it's about giving your child's body clean information to work with. Watch for changes in behavior, sleep, mood, and energy.
The Fight-or-Flight Trap
💡 A brain stuck in survival mode can't learn, focus, or regulate emotions—no matter how much therapy you do.
Why This Matters
Many children with autism, ADHD, and anxiety have overactive stress responses. Until we calm the nervous system, progress will plateau.
Take Action
Try: Increase time outdoors, especially in nature (grass, trees, natural water). Nature contact has been shown to reduce cortisol, calm the nervous system, and shift the brain out of fight-or-flight. Aim for at least 30-60 minutes of unstructured outdoor time daily. Barefoot on grass is even better—the earth's electrons help neutralize inflammation.
Sleep is Non-Negotiable
đź’ˇ During deep sleep, the brain's "cleaning system" removes toxins and consolidates learning. Poor sleep = poor brain function.
Why This Matters
Children who can't fall asleep or stay asleep often have underlying issues: low magnesium, gut problems, or cortisol dysregulation.
Take Action
Priority: Make sleep your #1 focus. A child who sleeps well can heal. A child who doesn't will struggle no matter what else you try.
Hidden Infections
đź’ˇ Chronic low-grade infections (viral, bacterial, yeast) can hijack the immune system and inflame the brain.
Why This Matters
A child doesn't have to "look sick" to have an infection affecting their brain. Many developmental regressions follow an illness—that's not coincidence.
Take Action
Try: Add an organic, food-derived vitamin C supplement to your child's daily regimen. Vitamin C is essential for immune function, helps the body fight infections, and supports the adrenal glands (which manage stress). Unlike synthetic vitamin C, food-derived sources come with cofactors that improve absorption. Also note: Did symptoms start or worsen after an illness? This is critical information many doctors don't ask about.
Screen Time & the Brain
💡 Excessive screen time—especially in children under 6—can wire the brain for rapid stimulation, making real-world learning feel "boring."
Why This Matters
The dopamine hits from screens can desensitize reward pathways, leading to increased irritability, shorter attention spans, and sleep problems.
Take Action
Honest check: How much screen time does your child actually get? Include TV, tablets, phones. The answer often surprises parents.
The Question That Changes Everything
"What is preventing my child's brain from functioning optimally?"
This is the question most doctors don't ask. But when we start asking it—and looking for answers through testing—things change.
