Silly Cubs fans... [20 Jun 2008|09:02am]
[ mood | Image satisfied ]

... katakana is for non-japanese words! So I went to the Rays game last night and had so much fun! We were surrounded by C(h)ubbie fans who were very vocal and ignorant about the Japanese language. For those of you who don't follow baseball, both our teams (and many others) have Japanese players on their rosters. Fukudome plays for the Cubs and Iwamura plays for the Rays.

There were a couple of Fukudome fans in front of us and on the back of their shirts had his name spelled out in Japanese..... BUT USING THE WRONG WRITING SYSTEM. :D (The Japanese language has four writing systems. See image below.) This completely made my evening and I hope they didn't pay too much for those shirts!

I wasn't gonna say anything to them, but they pointed to their shirts as I walked by because I had my Iwamura shirt on... so I let them know that they're idiots.

There is a Wikipedia entry on Wikipedia.
I'm serious.
Here it is.

This is like looking up the word "dictionary" in the dictionary.

The events of knowing what Wikipedia is and not knowing what Wikipedia is are mutually exclusive! It's a veritable Möbius strip.

So, I was confronted by Jehovah's Witnesses yesterday at my apartment.  Thankfully, it was my day off, so I had all the time in the world.

After their little spiel they asked me if I had accepted Jesus Christ as my lord and savior, I said "No, but let me ask you something. Are you familiar with one his most famous teachings? Do unto others as you would have done unto you?" They were like "yes, of course." and I said "well, do you want strangers to approach you only to confront your beliefs and question your faith?" And there was a pause so I jumped in and said "Well, that about wraps this up. I have to go to the store. Have a nice day."

Cris: isn't it ironic?

MB: don't you think? a little too ironic? yeah, I really do think

Cris: don't quote alanis morissette songs!

MB: I can't help it. pandora keeps sneaking them into my playlists

Cris: she uses the word "ironic" like 40 times in that song, and none of her examples are of irony!

MB: isn't that ironic?

Cris: ... NO! ... it's unfortunate.

When cards get sent around the office, it's usually for good reason - a birthday, retirement, birth, marriage, etc...  however, the one that ended up on my desk yesterday was truly unique. It was for one of the girls here who is leaving for 2 weeks to go on vacation in Europe... a "bon voyage" card, of you will. WTF! Normally, some apathetic sentiment flows from my fingertips and manifests itself in ink without effort, but this one stumped me. So I wrote "Are you swimming there? Watch out for sharks!" and I crudely drew some waves with a shark fin. *shrugs*

This reminded and inspired me at the same time. A while back, my friend Sara and I joked about making exuberant priced "greeting" cards for random occasions with scathing remarks in it.  The gears were turning in my head last night with some input and confidence from another friend.  Since writing haiku and being a complete bitch come naturally to me, the possibility of creating a website/business making such cards and selling them seemed exciting, lucrative and plausible.  "FU Haiku - because apathy is an option"...  I like card crafting and what's out there currently is at best stale.

A  friend of mine who is getting a divorce as a result of catching his wife with another guy gave me the opportunity to write the following haiku for him:

she cheated on you
your wife is a stupid whore
and so is her mom

This begs the question: WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO BUY A CARD WITH THAT AND GIVE IT TO THEIR FRIEND?!  Each card would be unique and handmade.  I would gleefully recruit Monique or Jason to help with artwork since I am not as talented in that aspect. And of course, I would need a website, too.  Perhaps I should ask them first?

I posted a survey bulletin on my space and one of the questions was what your display name (sypha belnades) means.

MB: "Sypha Belnades is a sorceress from Konami's Castlevania series. She appears as a playable character in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, which was published on the NES in 1990."

Rob:  "don't you mean she first appeared in 悪魔城伝説 (akamajou densetsu) for the famicom in 1989?"

MB:  "NO! IN 悪魔城伝説 (akamajou densetsu), HER NAME WAS URATA AND NOT SYPHA BELNADES!"

...and then it hit me - that was the geekiest thing I have ever said.

this time to ticketmaster - I just bought a couple of tickets for the Vatican Splendors exhibit tomorrow for mother's day...  After paying $3.50 convenience fees on BOTH tickets and then a service charge on top of that, I was pretty pissed. once the transaction was complete, they prompted me for a survey! here's what I said:

Your "convenience fees" are a little unreasonable - and by "a little", I mean "extremely". I mean, sure, I guess it would be okay per order, but per ticket? And then you charge an order processing fee on top of that, too? I spent an extra $10 on what? NOTHING! I might as well take a $10 bill out of my wallet and burn it. No, wait - I would at least get warmth in return. You should rename your company "ticketreich".

Here are pics of my new furry woodland creature, Mochi. His name comes from Japanese rice cakes made of glutinous rice that is pounded into paste and molded into shape. According to Japanese folklore, there is a rabbit on the moon that makes it.

Yet another great visit to EPCOT.  Whenever I go there crowds, rides, weather, food, etc. all seem to fall into place.  It rained yesterday, but that's ok... it was while we had reservations at the Whispering Canyon Cafe for Thelma's birthday.  While we were on our "motor coach" - Disney's fancy word for "bus", it stopped raining and started clearing up just in time to see all the flowers for the Garden Festival.

I laughed so hard so many times yesterday - been a while since I've done that.   Apparently, me, Monique, Thelma, Kevin, Stephanie, Glenda and Patrick are an indian tribe now... long story - but my indian name ended up being "Snarky Beaver"... and Thelma's is "Skinny Weasel". Kevin is "Chief Chunky Bear" LOL. There are so many other stories, but you had to have been there.

Besides EPCOT, the rest of my weekend was really good. I went out for drinks with some of the ladies from work for one of their birthdays and had a great time. Saturday, the weather was nice and I ran a ton of errands and had a friend over to watch some hockey.  While she was there, a man had a seizure while driving in our parking lot, and ended up running into a bunch of cars, so said the police officer who knocked on our door.  A bunch was really "three" and one was Brian's car and another was Dave's. I normally park next to them and thankfully didn't that time.

Habs won on Saturday again! But apparently, lost yesterday while I was at EPCOT. I tried asking all the people who work at Canada there for the score and no one knew. I was very disappointed - both in the Habs losing to BOS in OT and no one in Canada keeping track of this.
