1:23 pm - Crazy California Initiatives
|
The state of California has this initiative system. The idea is to allow to the people to rise up and enact laws that our elected officials refuse to enact. To do this you must A) Submit the language of the law and $200 to the Secretary of State, B) the Secretary of State then provides a 'circulating title and summery', C) Petitions are circulated with the circulating title and summery, D) if petitions are returned with unique voter signatures equal to or greater than 5% of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election then the measure goes to the voters in the next statewide election. This is all well and good.
Let's look at this list of measures that are currently submitted for step A:- A New Hope for California - Formation of a government panel to separate California from the rest of the USA. Looks to be mostly about access to federal land and water.
- The California Alimony Reform Act - Haven't read the whole thing but looks to abolish Alimony
- Sodomite Suppression Act - Orders the Governemnt to kill all sodomites and deport anyone possession sodomite propaganda
- The California Drug Price Relief Act - Prohibits CA Dept of Health to spend more than Veterans Affairs on prescription drugs.
- Revised Use of Reasonable Force Act of 2015 - Requires review of 'Reasonable Force' laws and training of police officers
- The California National Flag Act - Requires the California State Flag to be flown in first honor above the USA flag.
- California Independence in Statewide Elections Act - A candidate, committee, or slate mailer organization may not receive funds out of state
- The President of California Act - Replaces the title 'Governor' with 'President'
- Intolerant Jackass Act - Fines and sensitivity training for anyone who submits ballot language for the killing of sodomites.
Note: the proposed measures separating CA from the US (A New Hope, Flag Act, Independence in Elections and President of CA) are all submitted by the same person.
Can we 5150 (psychiatric hold) the whole state.

As you know, I am a volunteer member of the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit (BAMRU). I am writing in hopes that you would consider making a tax deductible donation to my search and rescue team this holiday season.
BAMRU is an all-volunteer search and rescue (SAR) unit, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. We look for and help people who are missing, lost, stranded, or injured in our home county of San Mateo, the greater San Francisco Bay Area, and the state of California.

11:47 am - Job Creation: Democrats vs Republicans
|
So I'm going to be posting a series of political messages. If you read my LJ, you know I'm pretty liberal. I know for most of my readers, I'm preaching to the choir. But I'm hoping that people will either link to these posts, copy them, or use the data as talking points when needed.
I don't want to spam everyone's friend's page to badly, so I will be putting them behind LJ cuts. Normally I would filter the posts but since I want people to be able to link to them, it would defeat the ability to link.
( Obama's proven record of job creation (and the Republican's record of stagnation)Collapse )

2:18 pm - Thoughts on SOPA and PIPA
|
Ironically, one of my rare posts to LJ is coming today. Today many websites are blacked out to protest the SOPA and PIPA bills making their way through congress.
First let me say that I completely think that SOPA and PIPA are wrong and should not just be amended but should be killed entirely. I fully support the sites that have gone black for today. Thank you for taking a stand. I do have some snarky comments about it though.Google: Blacking out your logo is a really small price to pay. An even smaller price since many people now don't even visit your home page to do a search. But if you really want to make a point, turn off all your services. Or at least turn off some of your services. Think about the stir it would make to not return search results or not spool YouTube for even a few hours. At least make people click through a page about SOPA before returning results.
WikiPedia: Nice splash screen. But if you need your WikiPedia information just turn scrips off and the site works great. (I even used it to research something for this post).
Free Software Foundation: You guys are doing it right. All links, all requests to your servers are 100% about SOPA. You've even turned of your mailing list for the day. Way to go!!! I do have some more random thoughts. These are not really organized but I wanted to throw them out there.
Google's SOPA explanation page wants you to sign a petition that includes the sentence: The most effective way to shut down pirate websites is through targeted legislation that cuts off their funding. I have a couple problems with this. The first is that a large portion of SOPA does just this. But my real concern is deeper than that. It has to do with user derived content. If a user post pirated data (audio, video, text...) to a site (say Facebook), does that make the whole site a 'pirate website'. Most websites make money through advertising. So the way to cut their funding is to cut their advertising. So would advertising on Facebook become illegal because someone put copyrighted material on the site? That means advertisers (and advertising companies) would have a huge burden to bare.
Even more of an issue for me in the whole SOPA/PIPA debate is copyright law. The theory behind copyright law is to protect creative works so we can encourage creators to create. But is copyright law really doing that? I don't think so. How does Disney's continued copyright on Mickey Mouse encourage Walt to make more cartoons? In 1790 Copyright in the US lasted less than 30 years; Now it last over 100. Does this make sense? I don't think so. Yeah, you should be able to protect your work but do you really expect to be making money on it for 100 years. The only thing these extended copyrights to is help the corporations that buy up copyright. Not to mention the creativity that happens when people start to use works that have entered the public domain.
Speaking of corporations, SOPA and PIPA are mostly being driven by the RIAA and MPAA. These corporations have spent the last decade controlling how you view their product and suing you if you consume them in any other way. So in a sense the current business model of the groups is to prevent access to their product and sue their customers. No wonder they are having problems. Furthermore, read some of the reporting about these companies: Asked about a network going dark as a public stunt in response to Internet blackout day, a media executive said Wednesday, "It's not practical. The only time that we've done anything coordinated like that across networks is in a time of national peril or national disaster. I don't think this qualifies."
The media executive also said that it had not been easy recruiting Hollywood talent for the cause. "Despite common understanding that we control the talent, they do whatever they want."
The executive added that there was some "disappointment" when Ashton Kutcher came out against SOPA. The star of CBS' "Two and a Half Men" came out against the legislation in late December, declaring in a lengthy blog post that "SOPA Is The problem And Not The Solution."
- Wall Street Journal, SOPA Bill Faces New Hurdles Read between the lines here. Even the artist that the big media companies claim to be protecting don't like the law. So the consumers don't like the law, the artists don't like the law. Until today the bill was chugging it's way through congress. No wonder the people don't think congress represents them and only represents the special interests.
I have lots more to rant about on this subject but that's enough for now. I now return you to your regularly scheduled LJ silence.
Note: This is an even rarer public post. I'm probably preaching to the choir on this one. But I do want this to be out there so that my voice at least has a chance of being heard beyond my friends.

12:05 pm - Lower your property taxes???
|
Just got this from the San Mateo County Assessor's office via the Sheriff's office. Thought it was worth passing along. While the instructing are San Mateo specific, I think the advice is good in all of California. Probably applies to places outside California as well.In the past week, San Mateo County property owners have been blanketed with solicitations from private companies that are luring people to spend money to reduce their property taxes. These companies cannot guarantee a reduction in property taxes to anyone. The law establishes which properties are eligible for this property tax relief program known as a "Decline in Value."
A "Decline in Value" request is FREE to any homeowner. We need your help to get the word out--tell your constituents, employees, friends, neighbors and family NOT to get ripped off--do NOT pay for these services. If anyone should ask, this is how the Decline in Value program works:
First, a property owner requests a Decline in Value review by filling out a simple form and sending to the Assessor's office (online, by fax, mail or in person). It only takes a couple of minutes to complete.
Second, our offices review the request. If a property's assessed value is more than its market value as of Jan. 1, the property owner will be eligible for a temporary reduction in assessed value. We will start the process that will lower their property tax bill or earn them a property tax credit.
Third, if the property is ineligible for relief, we will advise the owner as to why their property did not qualify for a reduction.
Where can someone get a form? Decline in Value request forms are available online and in downloadable paper formats from our web site at www.smcare.org. We will also mail them to a property owner and forms are available in our office if a person stops by.
And lastly, properties that are reduced are reviewed by the office on an annual basis. If the property continues to qualify, it will remain on the program in future years until the property's value is regained.
Please help us spread the word. I've attached the press release that we sent to the media and samples of the solicitations. You will note that is very professional looking and that is why it may snare unsuspecting property owners into this scam. Feel free to link, repost, copy, forward, throwout, do a tap dance....

5:51 pm - [RANT] Prop 8 Complaints
|
Yes this is a rant. Yes I realized I might ruffle some feathers. But I'm find myself needing to say it.
I'm finding reading LJ very difficult today. It may have to do with the utter exhaustion of working the polls yesterday. However I keep seeing bitching and complaints that Prop 8 passed, that the campaigns didn't air the right ads or enough of them or did respond to this or that or something else. I'm seeing links to journals with LJ names that I have never seen before.
My questions is: Where we you yesterday, last week, last month? We've know that the election was going to be on the first Tuesday of November since 1845. We've known that there was going to be a proposition on same-sex marriage since before San Francisco Pride.
What have you been doing? I have been calling people to action for months. (I bet my friends are sick of seeing the posts.)
If you didn't like the way EqualityCA was running the campaign, you could have donated to other groups that were running their own 'No On Prop 8' campaigns, such as Courage Campaign and Progressive Jewish Alliance. Courage Campaign ran my favorite 'No On Prop 8' commercial.
Didn't like the slogans and phrasing that were used by the campaigns? Make you own sign.
One of the things I really like about Obama is his campaign. I think his is the right leader for our time. However the way he organized his supporters, put the power in their hands, enabled them to go out and encourage others to vote for him, was what proved he would be a great leader. To me his campaign was more about empowering the people than anything I've seen in my life.
The empowerment can be taken with you. Start you own campaign. I took this to heart. I delivered signs to many people. I had my own stickers printed when I couldn't get stickers out of the offical campaign. I searched for the perfect spot to put signs. I answered phone calls, text messages, IMs, and LJ comments.
I answered so many questions about where to get signs, volunteer, find a field office. Almost all of these were less than 3 clicks from the front page of http://www.noonprop8.com. Or picking up the phone and making a quick phone call. If you had done this on your own, how much quicker would you have had the information?
The power really is in your hands. Not only to vote but to encourage others to vote in the way you want them. So once again I ask, Where were you yesterday, last week, last month? I even said "You don't want to wake up on November 5th thinking, 'If only I had...'"
</rant>
Yes I know a lot of people worked hard on the campaign or donated large sums of money. I do appreciate it. There are next steps and we will follow them. Just wish we weren't here at this point.

12:29 pm - Repost: No on Prop 8 community
|
Repost because yesterday's post was friends locked.
Yesterday, I created the community no_on_prop_8. I intend this to be a clearing house of information to help people convince others to vote No on Prop 8. The types of posts I am expecting are You Tube videos, where to get campaign signs/sticker/buttons, information about rallies, talking points, etc. Given that we are only 10 days from the election, I have left the community open. I expect people to be civil, polite and respectful. I will not hesitate to use a heavy hand as the moderator/maintainer.
Please Please PLEASE, link and spread the word. I know a lot of people want material but don't know how to get it. This is what this community is for.
I've been torn about posting things in my own journal. I don't like spamming my friends list and I have a bunch of out of state friends. But at the same time I want the information I post available to anyone, hopefully this will help with those two goals.

7:32 am - California: Last Day to Register to Vote
|
Today is the last day to register in California to vote in the Nov 4 election. If you register today make sure you hand your form into an elections office or make sure the post office puts today's post mark on it (don't just drop it in a mailbox).
Some of the Bay Area counties elections offices are listed below. All counties I list allow you to check your registration status online.
Alameda County (510) 267-8683 http://www.acgov.org/rov/
Santa Clara County (408) 299-VOTE http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/rov
Contra Costa County (925) 335-7800 http://www.cocovote.us/
San Francisco County (415) 554-4375 http://www.sfgov.org/site/elections_index.asp
San Mateo County (650) 312-5222 http://www.shapethefuture.org
If you're still confused there are many sites that will help you find the information you need. For example http://www.maps.google.com/vote or http://www.smartvoter.org
If you have any questions about the voting process from registration through voting to recounts, provisional voting and canvassing, I will be happy to answer them. If I don't know the answer, I will find it for you. Just comment on this post.
Feel free to link, copy, forward, etc.
Sorry to sound like a broken record. No more post about registration after today. After Nov 4, I'll return to my regular LJ habits (of almost never posting).

5:43 pm - Check Your Registration
|
Reminder to all Californians. Monday is the LAST day to register to vote. If you are mailing a card, you might want to spend a few minutes and make sure the post man actually stamps it with the date.
Also make sure you are registered to vote. If you live in the bay area check the listing below. All these counties allow you to check your registration status online. If there is a problem, re-register. There is nothing wrong with filling out another form.
Alameda County (510) 267-8683 http://www.acgov.org/rov/
Santa Clara County (408) 299-VOTE http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/rov

9:35 pm - No On Prop 8 Ground Game
|
Of interest for Californians.
At a party this evening, I had a discussion where we both agreed that the 'No on Prop 8' side is loosing the ground game. The 'Yes on 8' yard signs and bumper stickers have been popping up like weeds. Its time to fight back and get out ground game going. I encourage you to go to the No On Prop 8 Store and buy yard signs and/or bumper stickers. I also encourage you to volunteer.
A video, Gender Auditors (a.k.a. Keep the Government Out of Our Pants):
Please link, copy, repost, email.....
Note: The No On 8 Store does not currently show yards signs for sale. If you want a yard sign (or several) comment here and I will figure out how to get them.

9:22 pm - Voter Registration Status
|
I find my self pasting this into comments in other journals. So figured I should place it in mine (with lots of extras).
If you've moved since you last voted, you need to re-register. If you haven't voted since the last presidential election, check your registration. You may have been purged or moved to inactive. If you're not sure, you only lose a couple minutes of your time by re-registering. In California the last day to register is Monday, October 20. The form must be in to your county's register of voters by the end of that day. A POST MARK DOES NOT COUNT. If you think that you are ineligible to vote, call your county and double check. For example if you have been convicted of a felony and have finish your parole, you are eligible.
If you live in the SF Bay Area, chances are good you can check your registration status online (see links below, all the counties I list allow you to check online). If I don't list your county, you should be able to find it by typing "<your county> register of voters" into google.
Alameda County (510) 267-8683 http://www.acgov.org/rov/
Santa Clara County (408) 299-VOTE http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/rov
Contra Costa County (925) 335-7800 http://www.cocovote.us/
San Francisco County (415) 554-4375 http://www.sfgov.org/site/elections_index.asp
San Mateo County (650) 312-5222 http://www.shapethefuture.org
If you're still confused there are many sites that will help you find the information you need. For example http://www.maps.google.com/vote
There are also a lot of rumors going around that the police will be checking for outstanding tickets/warrants at the polls. These are completely untrue. If by some chance you do encounter something like that, call the news and the ACLU immediately. Do not wait for the next day/hour/minute.
If you have any question about voting in California, please ask me. If I don't know the answer, I will find it for you.
I also have to admit that I have the nasty habit of littering random places with voter registration cards.
Please copy, link, share.......

11:26 am - More Politics
|
From Craig's List Reno:I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight...
- If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're
"exotic, different."
- Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American
story.
- If your name is Barack, you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
- Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
- Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
- Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well
grounded.
- If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the
first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter
registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years
as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator
representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of
the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years
in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people
while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs,
Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you
don't have any real leadership experience.
- If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city
council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000
people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people,
then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking
executive.
- If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while
raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're
not a real Christian.
- If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your
disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a
Christian.
- If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including
the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
- If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no
other option in sex education in your state's school system while your
unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.
- If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in
a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city
community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values
don't represent America's.
- If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI
conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until
age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession
of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
OK, much clearer now.
