Personality: The biggest thing you need to know, and the thing that people seem to forget the most (especially in his 11th regeneration with all it's bow ties and floppy hair), is how old the Doctor actually is. Mentioned in the TV canon, the oldest he's claimed to be is 1200 years old. Think about that -- 1200 years of adventures and meeting people all through time and space. Think how fantastic that would be but also take into consideration everything that comes with that. That's 1200 years of doing whatever it takes to save the day; 1200 years of losing people. No one hates the Doctor more than he hates himself, he's a candy coated shell with a nice and gooey self loathing center. I think Matt Smith actually summed up the character perfectly when he said: “That’s what interests me about the Doctor because, actually, look at the blood on the man’s hands. 900 years, countless very selfish choices, and he’s literally blown planets up. His own race, you know, that’s all on his hands. Which is why I think he has to make silly jokes and wear a fez. Because if he didn't, he’d hang himself.”

The 11th Doctor is a ball of kinetic energy, he is absolutely always in motion. Whether this takes shape in him spinning around the main control panel in the TARDIS, tapping his knee incessantly when he feels like a thought as gotten the best of him, or letting word after word fall from his mouth out into long and complex run-on sentences that always make him sound more clever than any one person deserves to be. He's entirely prideful, always assuming he knows more – knows it all and is never a step behind. His ego is the size of planets. And despite all that blood on his hands, he is kind. His love for life (the human race above all else) honestly knows no limits which is why he's always taking a companion with him in his travels. That and the fact he's super lonely and should never be left alone with himself.
