Background Color Change

Image
This image was created for a Comedian to be used as a promo for an upcoming show. I used clipping paths, layers and layer blending modes to change the background colors which can be quickly changed to different color combinations. The background layer is meant to get it a more cartoon like or playful feeling.

Color Processing

Image
This series of images are essentially focusing on different color processes and custom made after effects.  In raw capture I processed each of the pictures in a variety of ways to evoke certain moods or feelings used in portraiture or editorial work.  I am always willing to learn new techniques and to push myself creatively I am using this series to create highly stylized and slightly more dramatic effects than just the standard color correction and skin work I normally do.

ImageThe first image is processed to emphasize a 'beauty' aspect.  I wanted to evoke a  feeling of ethereal beauty that focuses mainly on the eyes.  I also played with the cropping to create negative space for design copy.  I also muted the palette to create a pleasing and calming image. I also cleaned up the skin to bring the focus on the eyes and mouth.

ImageThis image I processed in Raw capture to create a antique tint type feel to the photograph. I used the channel mixer to take the image to black and white, then I created a custom sepia tone. After the color processing I used a scanned texture of an old metal place and used layer effects to add the over all weathered texture.  I also used dodge and burn tools in photoshop to vignette the edges and darken the eyes to give them more intensity.

ImageThis image I processed with a younger clientele or an edgier type over all feeling.  This was processed in raw capture and was split toned to create a film cross processed look.

ImageThis last photo is a bit more subtle, however if you look a the detail it is bringing out the rough edges and the texture of the image. This was processed in a gritty cartoon type style to create a different hyper reality shot with exaggerated texture. It was done by using extremes with levels, curves and fill light functions in raw capture.

Periodically I will be posting examples of my custom after effects and would like to post free textures, borders, and actions to those who may be interest.  I learn more every time I sit down with photoshop and raw capture, and I hope to continue learning.

BFA 'Windows and Doors' Series

Image
Enlightenment from BFA series.

As a photographer creative inspiration comes in many forms. My artistic vision does not stem from one intrinsic point. Rather, it is a collection of ideas, experiences, emotions and questions. Much of my photographic work is influenced by the past. Often small details will influence my photography. The texture of my mother’s old satin dress, the color of the sky in a snapshot, or even the movement of a person running through a Super-8 film reel can be ideas that I will spark a series of work. Just as tangible objects influence me, I am equally influenced by what is unseen. Through photography I continue to question the past, and the reality of the world that I live in today. By exploring themes of memory, reality and identity I am able to continue to grow as a photographer, artist and individual.

Cartoon Bridezilla

Image
I processed this photo in an editorial cartoon style that has become popular. I took the concept of bridezilla, and cartoon-ized it in raw processing, multiple layers and toning. I also smoothed the skin and brought out the eyes and playing with focused areas to add to the cartoon feeling.

BFA 'Windows and Doors' Series

Image This piece, Absence is from my BFA series Windows and Doors. This body of work is dealing with memory. The windows and doors being a medium through which one can draw upon their memories.

This piece was created through digital photography merged together in Photoshop with the use of my layering process. I feel that the layers of Photoshop can be a simile of the layers of memory.

Personal Work

I find that most my inspiration comes in small things and quiet moments. These images are a few of my personal work that I feel show a small part of my process and influences. I struggle with artist block at times and am looking for ways to creatively re-jump start. Often as I look over older work and just look at the world around me I find beauty and magic, to me things that are worth photographing.

Body Manipulation

Photobucket

These images were meant to portray the 'ideal' beauty. These images had the normal retouching on the skin and in addition I lengthened the torso and the neck to create a more aesthetically pleasing and elongated form. I also minimized the stomach and thighs as well as making the ears closer to the head. Overall, making her picture perfect.

This image I did the same type of treatment of elongating the torso and neck, as well as all the standard retouching by minimizing the stomach and thighs.

Fashion Retouching

Image
Recently I have been doing retouching for La Femme a fashion line of beautiful boutique style dresses. The main work that I have done for this client is truly to make their dresses look fabulous and by making the girls become picture perfect. As you can see in the picture above, I lengthened the dress as well as minimizing the middle section and removing the bow. These type of details can be very difficult when dealing with patterns and object, that makes my work quite challenging and fun.

ImageMost of the work involved in fixing the dresses included extending dresses so they hit floor length, smoothing out wrinkles, making the dresses fit the models perfectly.

Image
ImageSome of the images, I used multiple images to create an overall more pleasing view, in this case you can more easily see the beautiful print of the dress.

ImageAll the models received a basic slimming or shaping creating beautiful and flowing lines.

ImageImageI also worked on each of the models skin and hair to create the ideal woman.

La Femme makes absolutely amazing dresses and they have been great to work with. I have really learned a lot about working with dresses and retouching to create the ideal statuesque woman.

Assisi, Italy

ImageThis photo was taken in Assisi, Italy. This is a small mountain medieval village that was home to St. Francis (of Assisi). He was an inspiring man and this is an inspiring city. Probably one of my favorites while visiting Italy. As you can see in the before picture below I added the door and flowers to create interest in the photo.

ImageThese are the original images of the beautiful Vespa and the Image of the door that I took also in Assisi at a different place in the city while I was exploring.

ImageThis is the original photo that I took the two flower pots from the far right of this image to create the final picture above. This shot was take in the village of Siena, Italy. I used image composite methods, liquefy and transform tools to create the final image.

Composite and Caricatures

ImageThese are two images I worked while at Rubberball Productions. The first is one of a many that I worked where I composited two images together in Photoshop to create the realistic look that the man is literally crawling on a rat wheel. The Second image is a Caricature. Rubberball is one of the first companies to start creating digital composite caricatures. This caricature that I created in photoshop was done by using five different images and blending them smoothly and realistically into one image creating the 'bobble head' effect.

Borano Italy

ImageThis is an image that I shot while studying art history in Italy. This was taken on a small island called Borano, about 45 minutes by boat, away from Venice, Italy. This image before and after is to show how powerful the use of layers can be in Photoshop. To achieve the final image I used 8 different layers to bring multiple elements to the photograph. As you can see below in the animation that there are multiple layers for color and vignetting. I also added additional layers to bring in the detail in the sky.

ImageThe process of capturing a photo with multiple levels is called High Dynamic Range Imaging. "In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of exposures (the range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows."

ImageAs you can see I have used the HDRI techinques to get the portions of sky and buildings to the desired points. After doing that I continued using layers to remove elements like the fence on the left and the metal beams in the water. I then took boats from a different image and added them in to create more interest. I then put finishing touches on the color and took out the pink hues in the clouds. The result is two different images in the mood and detail I created with the HDRI and the use of layers. Please click on the images to see detail.

Body Manipulation and Retouching

Image
Image These images are to show works where I have digitally manipulated and liquefied the body shape. The first image I retouched I started with the standard routine: removing bags, moles, and other imperfections. Then I liquefied the side of her body to have a more pleasing and smooth shape. I also minimized the thighs and the folds and creases in the bathing suit to appear slimmer and less distracting. Please Click on the before and after image to see the detail. Since body manipulation can be subtle I am including animated gifs to show a more dramatic before and after.

Photobucket

Image
Image For this image I also did subtle, but yet important body manipulation. To create the perfect 'hourglass' figure I liquefied her body into a more pleasing and 'ideal' shape. I minimized the thighs. I also smoothed out the contour of the back and waistline. To make the image truly symmetrical I also shifted the left arm to appear at the exact same height. Overall these small things make a big impact visually.

Photobucket

Image
Image This image I did the standard retouching with the skin and bags under the eyes. I then liquefied and smoothed out the back line so it appeared smaller and minimized or removed folds in the skin. I also smoothed out and lifted the breasts slightly to create a more youthful and 'ideal' look.

Photobucket

Image

Image This last image is a close up of the model from the previous pictures. This shows extensive retouching and smoothing work on her skin. Since this image is a 'beauty' shot it is supposed to portray flawless beauty. As you can see by clicking on the before and after for a close up that I smoothed out fine lines and wrinkles, minimized bags under the eyes and removed blotchy skin and freckles.
