And so I find myself leafing through SpyCraft 2.0 again. Despite its warning that it's really not meant to be read, SpyCraft's been one of my favorite roleplaying books to read over the last few years. It's big, it's pretty, and like some editions of Dungeons & Dragons, seems to promise a world managed by numbers and rules that make every genre-appropriate task fun.
I love the character classes, the dramatic conflicts, the way the DM gets put on a budget. I love how missions have levels independent of the party level. I love the idea behind just about every element of the book. I debate with myself whether to run the perfect No One Lives Forever campaign, or maybe dip into the World on Fire setting, which seemed so interesting in the card game. Someone recently suggested Mass Effect. Or I could restat one of my steampunk games...
I've run the game only a few times, mostly when I was analyzing modern action games for professional reasons. It played solidly, and the similarities to D&D worked very much in its favor. I had a blast playing in a con game once. So we had a couple of good dates, but nothing ever developed.
But, like every 3.5 game, it's also intimidatingly big. The GM's role is fairly streamlined, yes... but there are a lot of options for players. The character options are fascinating, but also vast in number and complexity. It's hard to imagine asking players to make characters for a one-shot. Especially since I own the only copy in my circle of friends.
So I find myself looking at other espionage games. John Wick wrote Wilderness of Mirrors as an answer to SpyCraft, and its character classes are even cooler than SpyCraft's. My friends always talk up Top Secret/S.I., so I'm pursuing the run of that line.
Yet, SpyCraft looks at me from the shelf. Begging me to stat up Cate Archer or Ron Stoppable. You know, just for fun. Maybe to put together a lifepath system for it. Or mix in Iron Heroes, which uses similar number scales and, of course, the d20 system. License to improvise, indeed...
Anyone else share my unconsummated love of SpyCraft?

hahaha oh my god. I laughed out loud at the "all the Donnas" one. Also I'm working on a long essay about writing about poly relationships, so I may quote you.
