[sticky entry] Sticky: New Year, New Sticky!

enchantedsleeper: Hello Kitty in a fur-lined Christmas hat and jacket, with holly on her bow. (festive kitty)
It's that time again ([community profile] snowflake_challenge time!) and I've decided to refresh my blog sticky post ❤ While I was originally going to keep the old one and just make light edits, I decided to remake the whole thing, but a lot of the text will be familiar ;3

Transformative Works Policy: Blanket permission to transform! You can find this over on my AO3 profile. I made this official a couple of years ago and have received so many lovely podfic adaptations of my fic since then (especially during Voiceteam!), which was probably predictable but I didn't see it coming at all 😂 Rock on, podficcers! Maybe one day I'll finally join you...

Fannish Things I Love to Do: You'll always find me writing fic, and I'm trying to make more time for fanvids in my life (so many ideas, so little time X3). I draw the odd fancomic, and I also love to edit wikis - primarily Fanlore but also fandom-specific wikis, which are a resource I call on constantly during my fic writing, so I like to give back, too.

Some of my recent fandoms have been: D&D: Honor Among Thieves, FENCE, The Murderbot Diaries, Across the Spiderverse, and SK8 the Infinity; I feel like I fall into new fandoms a bit too easily, but I'm always excited to come back to my past fandoms and rarely completely "leave" them.

Where to Find Me: Social media-wise, I'm mostly on Mastodon (I have my profile set to request to follow - I don't mind follow requests, but I prefer to have some idea of who the people are that are following me) and Tumblr. I've also just started (as of this Snowflake Challenge!) posting to Pillowfort, so please say hi if you're also there, as I'd love to make some friends! But I also want to be more present here on DW, so please also come hang with me here if you're not on any of the other sites (or even if you are!)

Fanworks-wise, I post mainly to AO3 and cross-post to Fanfiction.net if it's a fandom or ship that I think people there will want to read. I use SquidgeWorld for miscellaneous things I don't want to post to AO3. I have published fic to Tumblr in the past, mostly for The Strange Case of Starship Iris, but I still haven't got around to setting up a proper page for it. You can also find my vids on Youtube and Vidders.net.

I wish everyone a healthy and happy 2024!

Hey, everyone; happy new year! This wasn't originally intended as a new year's post; I started jotting it down a few days after Christmas, thinking that it would just be a quick reflection (ha, it's like I don't know myself at all) but worth posting anyway, and then it wound up becoming longer and taking a while to finish writing. But it feels like a decent sentiment to start off the year: namely, holding onto what matters.

I've had plenty of occasion to think about backups recently.

In November, my laptop hard drive abruptly yeeted itself from this mortal plane - the second such meltdown within 9 months (in hindsight we should have replaced it after the first one, but we weren't 100% sure it was a hard drive problem. After the second time, we were xD)

Luckily, thanks to the software that my partner and I splurged on after the first meltdown, we were able to reconstruct the partition and recover my files, but that took a while and I'd been working on a job application when everything went kaboom. Also luckily, I had been paranoid enough to save copies of my application responses to Dropbox with the thought process, "Would I be more annoyed if I somehow lost these than if I took a few extra moments to back them up?"

Which turned out to be extremely sound logic.

My tech misadventures weren't over, because midway through December I then lost my phone to an unfortunate dip in the toilet. (Sadly, this was not my first rodeo with a toilet-related phone demise, nor was it even my second). I had thought that my largely waterproof case would be enough to save it, but it wasn't to be.

Anyway, this has given me plenty of opportunity to not just consider but experience the answer to, "What if you abruptly lost access to the things you assumed would always be accessible to you - what would you wish you'd done differently?"

Le gasp, it's that time of year again already!

Thank you so much for being my gifter, for considering making a treat for me (I have gifts enabled and treats are so welcome!), or for otherwise taking an interest in this letter ^^

In general, I'm open to most things in a vid/gift - while I'll put a few preferences below, they're not that strongly held, because I find a wide variety of things interesting and cool. So, feel free to be unorthodox; feel free to get creative; feel free to make whatever you're inspired to by the fandom material 😄

General likes

  • Lyrics that match well with the visuals of a vid, especially those moments where it’s really bang on with what’s happening in the clip – love that
  • Pretty much any genre of music – though I admit that death metal would be an unusual choice for my requested fandoms, but otherwise, my preferences with genre are generally “yes”. Whatever you’d like to use for the material, I’m on board with. That includes instrumentals with no lyrics if you’re so minded (I’m a fan of classical music, and there are many epic orchestral pieces that I think can make great fanvids!)
  • Upbeat or hopeful vids/visuals, although I’m on board with angst – I’d just prefer to stay on the “bittersweet” end of the spectrum rather than “tragic”
  • Shippy vids or vids that focus on any kind of relationship between characters (friendship, queerplatonic, mutually obsessed enemies)
  • Vids that tell a story
  • Very open to non-traditional vids with creative combinations of visuals/audio/sound (which for some, non-visual, fandoms is needed of course, but even if it’s not, go for it!)

General dislikes

  • Dialogue in vids is not a hard 'no' for me, but I prefer it to be used more subtly – rather than to be audible all the time – so that the focus can be on the lyrics/music and visuals. I enjoy some good sound effect inclusion, though!
  • Hopeless or bleak vids (i.e. "hurt no comfort") – as I mentioned, I’d prefer them to be hopeful in some way, and bittersweet if not outright upbeat (not every fandom is a ray of sunshine!)

Above everything, I hope you have a great Festivids, and thank you again for vidding for me! <3

Last week I went to the cinema to watch James Gunn's Superman reboot. I went with two friends, one of whom is a fellow Superman enjoyer and the other of whom doesn't even really do superheroes - but all of us had a great time.

As someone who was very much a fan of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) but has since dropped off following it almost completely, I would definitely say I had superhero adaptation fatigue. But I'm glad I went to see it - and it's also given me a cause to reflect on my past Superman fandom and the fact that I am, in fact, a Superman girlie at heart.

Meme showing a yellow schoolbus labelled Superhero Fatigue turning onto a road. In the next image it is violently broad-sided by a freight train labelled Superman 2025.
Pretty much this (source: Tumblr)

When I first saw the posters and marketing for Superman, my knee-jerk reaction was, 'Do we really need another Superman film?' Okay, James Gunn is a good director, but that alone wasn't enough to convince me that it would be worthwhile. Apparently this one was going to have a super-dog in it, which is different, but not something that really appealed to me. It wasn't until my friends took an interest (and shared some very fun interviews with the cast members) that I considered seeing it at all, much less in the cinema.

While there obviously are commercial motivations at play, I can now say that it was also clearly made with a lot of care and heart, a lot of love and respect for the source material, and that's so evident when watching the film.

The topic of this blog post is: things that have been away for a while. Exhibit A: me!

I had every intention of continuing the Snowflake Challenge/Year in Review set of posts I began in January, but my work - which was already semi-upended by the time I got the first of those posts out - became even more upended after that. I wanted to at least post Part 2 of my 'Looking back at fannish goals for 2024' two-parter – it feels weird to have Part 1 hanging out there without a counterpart – but I haven't been able to make it a priority, and I didn't want to add "Dreamwidth posting" to the list of things I was stressed about.

At the same time, I felt weird moving onto another topic and shutting that door altogether. Still, since it's now June (ack), I'm officially freeing myself from the burden of picking up that dropped thread in favour of posting about other things, because I miss it! So, hi - how is everyone doing?

Since I last checked in, I've found time to keep up a few things here and there like adding to my fanworks archive (not much, but I archived a few things for March Meta Matters and a couple more in May, while also making some tweaks to my meta organisation) and writing drabbles (I took part in the Small Fandoms Drabblethon again and then the spring round of Seasons of Drabbles). I've got into some new things, too, like the animated series Hazbin Hotel – but it's an 'old' thing I intend to talk about for the second half of this post.

Exhibit B: The Strange Case of Starship Iris, one of my all-time favourite podcasts, which has showed up in a few of my posts here (such as this pimp post I cross-posted, which is a good shout if you want context for what I'm talking about).

One of my favourite prompts for the [community profile] snowflake_challenge is always setting fandom (and fandom-adjacent) goals for the year ahead: it feels like a really nice way to set out what I'd like my year to consist of. Since fandom has positive connotations for me, it's essentially a list of "some cool things I want to do in 202X!"

(They're also the only new year's resolutions I bother to set, these days xD)

Since last year I've also taken to reviewing my goals for the previous year before I set new ones, just to see how I did. It doesn't matter if I missed any (I never make all of them) - often thinking about how my year was different to what I anticipated is just as interesting.

In 2024 I was really ambitious and set eight(!) goals, so I'm going to split this into two parts, otherwise it would be like... 3,000 words long xD You can check out my goals for 2024 here if you're curious.

1) Make a fanvid (not for a challenge/event)

Hey, everyone! Happy new year!

I haven't found time to blog in a while because the end of last year and exchange season specifically were pretty manic (I said the same thing last time and resolved to dial back my exchange participation for 2024-5 and then I... did not do that) and I only finished up my remaining fanwork, my Festivid, a couple of weeks ago.

(Still waiting sort-of-patiently for reveals...!)

But I have posts in the works for the Snowflake Challenge that I'm determined to put up at least some of before January is out, and I also wanted to make a short post about a fun trip that I recently took down memory lane.

A few days ago I was reading some of the recent Snowflake Challenge posts on Mastodon and got to reminiscing about early fannish interactions with Yu-Gi-Oh! with Mochibumbum/xx_HoneyRoses_xx over on blorbo.social. (The theme was Snowflake Challenge #10: Fandom Firsts). Mochibumbum recalled how Kids WB/4Kids used to air a segment alongside Yu-Gi-Oh! where they would display fanart that people had sent in from around the world. In turn I reminisced about my aunt recording episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! for me and my brother on VHS and sending them to us in the post (because she had Sky and we didn't at the time) and then us later watching it on a children's breakfast TV show called 'Up On the Roof'.

Hello! Thank you so much for creating a gift or a treat for me this Yuletide (I have gifting enabled on AO3 and treats are so very welcome)! I hope that this letter will help give you a steer if you're looking for inspiration or ideas!

With that said, I'm a firm believer in optional details being optional so please feel free to follow your heart and create something that you have fun with! That's the most important thing!

As long as my DNWs are avoided (and hopefully I can make that easy to do), I'll be beyond delighted!

General likes:

  • Fluff and humour
  • Friends to lovers, or frenemies to lovers
  • Tropes related to sleep and dreaming, or nightmares for a hurt/comfort flair
  • Hurt/comfort (I love my angst to be combined with sweetness or humour)
  • Outsider POV
  • Polyam dynamics
  • Happy endings, or an overall optimistic/"hopeful in spite of it all" vibe
  • What-ifs and gap-fillers
  • Being in denial about feelings/mutual pining
  • Non-cis, queer and a-spec takes on characters
  • AUs of any kind - please be as creative as you like!

It's been a while since I checked in on SquidgeWorld (not since I last posted a work there at the end of July), so I was really pleased to find that they've implemented some new things since I was last there, including nonbinary relationship categories! That's an additional three relationship categories (alongside the existing F/F, F/M, M/M, Multi, QPR, Gen, Vs./Antagonistic, and Other): F/NB, M/NB, and NB/NB.

They don't have icons designed yet, so I'm looking forward to when that's implemented because I like having a full icon set (or as full as is applicable) on my works. (Plus, right now it looks like the works where I've tagged only a NB relationship category aren't tagged with any relationships 😅)

I didn't have as many works to re-tag as I'd expected, partly due to not having archived my full set of works over at SquidgeWorld, but also because a lot of the nonbinary characters I've written about in fic have not been in romantic relationships in those works. However, I archived an additional Starship Iris work for a threesome ship (really, it's more of a pre-threesome, but I'm counting it) that I'm fond of, but that I haven't written into any further works, and it's made me think about revisiting that ship, something I haven't considered in a while.

I also learned that SqWA had an influx of a couple of thousand new users in mid-September, which is exciting! I hope they stick around. Right now my M.O. for cross-posting anything to SquidgeWorld is a bit haphazard; it's somewhere I put up works that I haven't published to AO3 for whatever reason, plus some small fandoms stuff, and I also like to post things there that I can categorise in ways I can't on AO3, like the NB relationships and QPRs. Still, I'd like to add other works there, but I can't decide on a rationale (and I don't want to cross-post absolutely everything). Decisions decisions.

Speaking of archiving, I got some good stuff done on my personal fanworks archive during Small Web September, but I really need to get back on the horse and archive more works there, especially since I now have my fanwork page CSS sorted to my liking.

My general existential "nope" about the passage of time continues, as it's somehow managing to be almost September already 😱 I'm currently on a trip that I've been hugely looking forward to that started on 21st August, so, I'm also delighted that it's finally here! But, you know, I feel conflicted, because the last portion of the year is rushing at me super fast 😅

Still, I have something coming up in September that I'm very excited about. I was chatting to [personal profile] kalloway, who runs the lovely [community profile] smallweb community, about our mutual desire for a small web-themed event that would give us some motivation to work on our respective archives, and kalloway encouraged me to start something myself if I felt inclined and offered to host it. So, I noodled on some ideas for what a small web event/challenge could look like, and devised Small Web September!

Small Web September is very much in the spirit of March Meta Matters, because I really enjoyed that event and I like the format of having regular prompts and check-in points where people can share their progress, thoughts and challenges. So, over on smallweb, there'll be five check-in points for people to join in, chat about their small web projects, give advice and troubleshoot, and hopefully achieve some cool things! Here's what the schedule will look like:

I know I wasn't the only person who was a little sad that the [community profile] sunshine_challenge didn't run again this year! I hope that the organiser is doing okay.

However, for anyone who is yearning for some prompts to inspire them, the mod of Pillowfort's Snowflake Challenge community is revisiting Snowflake's challenges during the summer so that people can have a second go, revisit their thoughts, or do challenges they didn't get to in January.

This is just happening on Pillowfort, but for anyone who doesn't feel like signing up there, there's no reason you can't answer the challenges over on your DW! (But also, if you'd like to join Pillowfort to take part, don't let me stop you :D I even have invite codes!) They're being posted at a rate of three per day, and challenges 7-9 just went up.

So far, I've done Day 1 (updating my Pillowfort blog description, which was a touch outdated now that I've been there a while) and Day 4 ("Tell us about yourself"), for which I created a Fort Brochure - a Pillowfort post that describes your blog policies on things like commenting, following, blocking, etc.

I'm looking at doing Day 9, "Recommend a new thing", next and posting one of the fandom manifestos I've been meaning to get to.

[personal profile] kitarella_imagines came up with a fun game that involves looking at your most-used fanwork tags of certain types (this works best on a site like AO3 or SquidgeWorld that provide tags in a handy sorting menu, but you can probably do it on any site with tagging, or adapt it to your preferred fanwork hosting site).

I decided to give it a go, so here are my answers to the prompts:

1. What rating do you write most fics under?

General Audiences by a long way! (82 out of 111 works currently on AO3). Most of my fanworks don't have much by the way of higher-rated content. Next highest is Teen and Up with 26; for Mature I only have 2, and Explicit, a lone 1.

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?

  1. The Strange Case of Starship Iris (25 works)

  2. Yu Yu Hakusho (11 works)

  3. A tie between Harry Potter (8 works) and SK8 the Infinity (8 works)

For a long time, Yu Yu Hakusho was my top fandom, after I separated out my Dabbling in Drabbling series into separate works (as opposed to a multichapter fic, which was a hold-over from Fanfiction.net). This used to bother me, because I didn't feel like I'd done "enough" in the fandom to justify YYH being at the top. (Actually, though, I have more works for the fandom that could be archived there and currently aren't).

However, I came around to enjoying the fact that an anime fandom was near the top, since it's reflective of my fandom origins - my early fics aren't generally archived on AO3, so most of my early anime fandoms don't appear, but I was still into Yu Yu Hakusho when I discovered AO3 in 2011, so, those fics got cross-posted. xD SK8's number is also high thanks to drabbles, and that drabble series was directly inspired by my YYH one. Long live drabbles!

Recently, while in a group chat, I made a Pirates of the Caribbean joke (some material that we were working with had the phrase "more like guidelines" which is a frequently-used description of the Pirates' Code in the first film) and it gave me the urge to listen to the PotC soundtrack. I have the soundtrack from the first film, though I'd yet to play it on this laptop apparently which is a bit sad (I've had this laptop since 2020 xD)

As soon as I hit play I was thrown back in time to my Pirates of the Caribbean obsession, when I would fire up the film on my parents' TV (which had a DVD player) and watch it over and over every night. It remains one of my all-time favourite films, and the soundtrack is so good - I don't know it quite well enough to picture every single scene that goes with the music, but some moments are definitely there in my head as I'm listening, and the drama and excitement comes through in the scoring.

When I was in Pirates fandom in 2006-ish, I remember that the Hide the Rum forum had a poll where people voted for their favourite track in the PotC soundtrack. Most of the votes went to 'He's A Pirate' (the end credits music), which I found a bit boring and predictable xD I mean, it's great and it has the theme! But it seems like an 'obvious' choice xD There was also some love for 'Will And Elizabeth', which is a really good track - lots of the theme coming through in this one, and it's got a great pace to it.

It seems like I tend to get my act together enough to make a post around the end of every month xD I've got some post ideas that you'll hopefully see in July, but before that, here's a few things I've been up to...

At the end of May I wrote a Starship Iris fanfic for the Small Fandoms Surprise Scramble, the old stars are of no importance, which is on Dreamwidth at that link there or on AO3 (or even Tumblr if you're so inclined xD). This was the first non-drabble fic that I'd written for Starship Iris this year (and since 2022), so it was really nice to write and post, not least because it centres on one of my favourite characters from the podcast, RJ McCabe.

The Small Fandoms Surprise Scramble gave me a great incentive to think up and work on this little idea, with a deadline to make sure I got my finger out to finish it. I was originally going to write some drabble ideas I didn't get around to during the Small Fandoms Drabblethon (same comm, different event!), and technically I still could, because [personal profile] kalloway has mentioned that the Scramble is still quietly open for new works between now and the next event in August. So, if anyone sees this and thinks they'd like to make something, you're in time! Here's a link to the event details.

*looks at date* errrrr

So, I guess May got away from me in a similar fashion to April ^^;

I spent the time doing some cool offline and online/creative things, so it's not like I haven't done things that I wanted to! I just didn't have the time for blogging that I'd hoped/anticipated. (Also, I think that some of my "less time" was due to making a concerted effort to fix my terrible sleeping schedule and stop being tired all the time, whereas normally I would have stayed up an extra hour or two).

However, that isn't to say I haven't been doing some Dreamwidth things! So, here's what I've been up to (and also some archiving stuff off the back of Archive April/general archiving thoughts).

I'm a little behind on my 3W4D posting - I had planned to have a proper post up today, but it's the last day of April and thus the last day for pimping my small fandom over at [community profile] smallfandomfest, where I had signed up to write about my favourite podcast, The Strange Case of Starship Iris. I was determined to make the deadline, and so my blogging energy tonight went towards writing my pimp post!

So, I'm including part of that below, with a link where you can read the full thing if you're interested. Pimping my fandom-pimping ;D

---

My favourite way to sum up TSCOSI in a nutshell is to say that it's "be gay, do crime in space". Like many excellent podcasts, it's very queer, and has a diverse cast of characters (and voice actors, as the creator made a point of casting VAs who match the race and gender of their characters as closely as possible) with a heavy dose of found family. It's also very funny: the writer and creator, Jessica Best, has a real flair for humour, but the emotional beats also really hit home. There's a reason that Starship Iris has won an Audioverse Award three times (in 2017, 2019 and 2021) for its writing - as well as a number of other awards for production, vocal direction, original compositions and voice actor performances.

But enough accolades - what is the podcast about?

The show page for The Strange Case of Starship Iris at Procyon Podcast Network (a production group that produces TSCOSI along with several other podcasts) summarises the premise as follows:

"In 2189, Earth narrowly won a war against extraterrestrials, but at a tremendous price. Two years later, in a distant patch of space, a mysterious explosion kills nearly the entire crew of the science vessel Starship Iris. The only survivor is Violet Liu, an intrepid, sarcastic, terrified biologist. But as Violet struggles to readjust to life after the Iris, questions abound. Was that explosion really an accident? If not, just what is going on? And why does every answer seem to get more bizarre and more dangerous? If Violet and her newfound allies want to untangle the truth, they'll need courage, brilliance, and luck - and honestly, a couple of drinks."

As the name implies, there's a healthy mystery element to the podcast, which is what first got me interested - I had vowed to start Listening to Podcasts and was working my way through some recs in a group chat, the first of which was Arden, a satirical take on true crime podcasts. After that, I had the urge to listen to another mystery podcast, and TSCOSI was my next pick. Season one has a really clever premise where the episodes are framed as "reports" read by a mysterious government operative, and what starts out as a simple framing device evolves into a central element of the mystery. Little clues to what's going on are scattered throughout the report narration, and we follow the core cast's attempt to unravel the mystery with juuust a little bit more information than they have.

What small fandom would you get more people into if you could? Small fandom promoing has been a bit of a theme lately, as over on Pillowfort, monsterhugger created a rallying point for small fandoms where people could post about the smaller fandoms they'd like to see content of on PF - or anywhere. After enjoying the Small Fandoms Drabblethon so much in February, I'm really getting into small fandom initiatives...

After my preparatory prompt-posting (very satisfying alliteration) for 3W4D, I didn't get around to making a post yesterday because I had some other stuff to finish in the evening. Still, even if I only post every other day, that'll still be a lot!

I have a couple of prompts I want to use during this event, one of which is my own writing-about-fanworks prompt, but I was also inspired by [personal profile] bluedreaming (who had a challenge involving putting your music library on shuffle and then using the song that comes up to write a flashfic) to shuffle my music library and write about whatever song comes up. I never get tired of writing about music, so I would find that really fun!

But today my song has been decided for me, because one of my favourite bands, Marianas Trench, has a new song out and IT'S SO GOOD:

In honour of Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I wanted to share some blogging prompts I came up with over on Pillowfort, where they're called "blanket boxes" (a play on furnishing/building a pillow fort with blankets). They usually have a theme tying them together - previously I shared a nostalgia-themed set, and this set is themed around webcomics!

I'd love to encourage more discussion of webcomics, so hopefully these reach some interested people. Fancomics count for this prompt set! Daily gag strips, Webtoons, long-running slice of life comics; it's all included.

It's traditional to have a set of opening guidelines, so first:

  1. The first rule of Blanket Box is that there are no rules :D
  2. Feel free to interpret the prompts however you see fit. Any kind of comic that's posted online counts for this Box, including fancomics and doujinshi if you'd like to count those!
  3. Take as many "blankets" from the box as you need - it doesn't have to be all of them. Or in other words, skip any of the prompts you don't fancy answering!
  4. If you use these prompts, it would be lovely if you could link back to this post. 💜
Webcomic Blanket Box prompts )

Do I have any fellow webcomic fans in the house? Even if you don't fancy doing the prompts, I'd love to know!

One Pillowfort creation that I really like is called a 'Blanket Box', which is a play on the site's name being Pillowfort (many PF terms are plays on 'Pillowfort' xD). You use blankets to build (or furnish; some people say furnish) your fort, and so a box of blankets allows people to build up their Pillowfort blog! In other words, it's a set of blogging prompts (usually geared around a certain theme, like music, a fandom, or just what you're doing that moment).

I've been thinking of sharing some over here on DW, as they're very versatile prompts, and Three Weeks for Dreamwidth (which starts today and runs for the next 3 weeks) is a great time to share prompts that people might like to use! I wouldn't want to share any written by other people without permission, but I've created two blanket boxes myself that I can share: one themed around nostalgia/childhood, and one themed around webcomics. I'm sharing the nostalgia one first, as it was my first blanket box!

Blanket boxes are traditionally accompanied by a set of guidelines, which are along the lines of:

  1. The first rule is that there are no rules :D
  2. Feel free to interpret the prompts however you like. For the nostalgia prompts, I'd add: You can interpret "childhood" however it makes sense to you to interpret. It's not a fixed or static thing (and I won't pin anyone down to a particular age, that would be very unfair), so go with what you instinctively think of as your childhood/younger years. Also, everyone's past/childhood is different, and not everyone had the same people, places and things when they were younger! So, please amend or skip prompts if you don't feel that they fit.
  3. Feel free to link this elsewhere so other people can use it! It's also usually encouraged to use a set tag, such as "Nostalgia Blanket Box", to help people find the fills. I'd love to know if anyone uses these!

And now for the prompts...

It's almost Three Weeks for Dreamwidth again! Here I was so focused on Archive April that I didn't even think about another blogging event that's coming up this month. I'm grateful that I saw [personal profile] bluedreaming's Mastodon post about it or I wouldn't even have realised that it starts tomorrow.

After the event had finished last year, I came up with a blogging prompt idea that I really liked, but it was too late to use it myself, so I waited until now to share it xD (I know I could have posted it any time, but I thought it would have less chance of getting lost in the shuffle this way). It's a prompt for anyone who fancies writing about fanworks (though it can apply to original works, too!)

Here's the idea:

  1. Make a list of all of your fanworks (or original works) - up to you what counts as a fanwork, it can be anything you'd like to write about! These don't have to be in a particular order.
  2. Give each work a number.
  3. Every day (or every other day or however often you'd like to do it), roll some dice* or generate a random number, and then look for the work that corresponds to that number.
  4. Write a post about that work - sort of a DVD commentary, maybe talking about how you came up with it, what it means to you, why you created it, how it came together, etc. Anything you feel like!

*Probably several dice depending on how many works you have. It's probably an advantage if you're a D&D player who has lots of dice with different numbers of faces xD

This could be done with any type of list, so you could do it with a list of recs, too, if you'd like to write about other people's creations. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to share this idea for anyone who's looking for 3W4D inspiration (or general blogging inspiration!). For other ideas, [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith has created a really extensive list of prompts and questionnaires. I might also share some 'Blanket Boxes' from Pillowfort - lists of prompts to build your blog (known as a fort :D).

Is anyone looking to take part in 3W4D, and do you have a theme/set of prompts in mind?
