The EQUS story
Leading the Second Quantum Revolution
From 2018 to 2025, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) brought together researchers across Australia to engineer quantum machines and shape a thriving national quantum ecosystem. We combined world-class discovery with translation, training, and outreach — ensuring Australia was not just participating in the second quantum revolution, but helping to lead it.
EQUS catalysed breakthroughs in quantum science and translation, positioning Australia as a global leader in a field that will transform industries and societies. Our legacy lives on in the people we trained, the companies and collaborations we seeded, and the technologies we helped bring to life — all building blocks of Australia’s quantum future.
Why quantum matters
During the past two decades, quantum technologies have rapidly evolved from fundamental research to transformative applications across energy, health, agriculture, defence, and mining.
Quantum is already in our lives — in phones, cars, and imaging systems — but today’s technologies capture only a fraction of its potential. A new generation of quantum technologies is emerging, with possibilities that include:
-
Quantum sensors that are cheaper, lighter and more sensitive
-
Quantum imaging systems to find gas leaks or see through smoke
-
Quantum communication technologies for ultra-secure data transfer and storage
Looking forward
The Next Generation
EQUS was more than a research centre. It was a community of scientists, students, and partners working to turn bold ideas into reality. We’ve trained the next generation. We’ve created new pathways between research and real-world impact. And we’ve formed lasting connections that will continue well beyond the life of the Centre.

Building Australia’s quantum future
EQUS‘ reputation as a powerhouse of innovation in quantum science and research has come from its research tackling demanding challenges in fundamental science as well as applied technology. Our solutions will continue to stimulate economic, medical, social, cultural, and environmental benefits well beyond the end of the Centre. These quantum technologies will, in the future, help us meet challenges facing Australia – such as enhancing national security, enabling the green transition, and improving quality of life for the general public.
Alongside its research success, EQUS has been key in building a thriving quantum and advanced technologies ecosystem – keeping innovation, experts and businesses in Australia to reap the benefits of quantum investment. It has made Australia’s innovation, talent, and leadership clear as a key player in this extraordinary field.
EQUS’ impact and legacy ensures that Australia is a global focal point in the second quantum revolution. It has laid the long-term groundwork by undertaking research, creating technologies, and training the people needed to build a quantum future.
