From 2011 to 2025 the Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) conducted internationally-leading quantum research, paving the way for the next wave of innovation in quantum science, and established Australia as an international hub for a thriving quantum ecosystem.

Before EQUS there was... EQuS

Established in 2011 and funded again in 2017, the Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) is internationally recognised as a leader in breakthrough research. It has repeatedly been a critical catalyst in both research and ecosystem building; has seeded, fostered and accelerated useful quantum machines into the world; and has supported Australia’s global leadership towards a quantum-enabled future.

The original EQuS (2011-2017) focused on individual quantum systems and components. Building on the success of that Centre, the second incarnation of EQUS (2018-2025) brought those individual components together to build quantum machines for practical applications.

A Centre of Excellence

Centres of Excellence are focal points of expertise through which high-quality researchers maintain and develop Australia’s international standing in research areas of national priority. Through the ARC Centres of Excellence, significant collaborations occur between universities, publicly funded research organisations, other research bodies, governments, and businesses in Australia and overseas, all to support outstanding research.

Meet the EQUS team. The strength of EQUS was never just its research – it was the people who made it happen. From students and staff to investigators and professional teams, this network shaped the Centre’s culture, achievements and long-term impact. The researchers and professionals who came through EQUS are now contributing across science, industry, government and education – and may be the Centre’s most enduring legacy.

Read the EQUS research blog. From 2018 to 2025, the EQUS blog followed the Centre’s journey – capturing research milestones, outreach efforts, team achievements and community stories. It offers a record of EQUS in motion: who we were, what we achieved, and how we engaged with the broader scientific and public landscape.

Read EQUS’ key documents. These offer a window into how EQUS worked, what the Centre set out to achieve, and what it learned along the way. From Annual Reports and the Strategic Plan to the Translation White Paper and EQUS Legacy magazine, these documents chart the ambition, evolution and outcomes of a national research centre in engineered quantum systems.
