The aim of this English-Basque conversation guide is to help any English-speaking person to be able to have a basic conversation in the language of the Basques: tourists visiting Basque-speaking areas who want to show respect for the language and culture of the Basque people and make a good impression; students of the Basque language; foreigners who live in the Basque Country; indeed, any person who would like to communicate in this Pre-Indo-European tongue, one of the oldest living languages on our planet. In order to achieve these aims, we have selected some expressions from everyday Basque speech and based on a variety of possible situations. Logically, therefore, this forms the main part of the guide. The book also has an introduction to the Basque language, a pronunciation guide and a short section on basic Basque grammar. The grammar is not - nor do we wish it to be - a complete grammar course but, as the name implies, it is a brief description of the main points, such as word order, the use of the article, the construction of the main verb tenses, etc. And, at the end, there are two vocabulary sections - English-Basque and Basque- English - that collate the words from the example sentences, together with some other useful ones. Needless to say, this book cannot make up for the study of and practice in the language. However, it can provide the basis for being able to cope with the Basque language at a basic level...
