A yearly average was developed using five years of the most recent available data: 2020 to 2024. CDC’s database is broadly considered to be the most comprehensive source of data on fatal firearm injuries. However, two of its intent categories—“legal intervention” (i.e., shootings by police) and “unintentional deaths”—are estimated to be underreported. This is largely due to missing information on death certificates that may result in the misclassification of intent. The total of the intent category averages may not equal the yearly average due to rounding. See the Methodology page for more information.
