Saliva Sample Collection Guide

Step-by-Step Collection Guide

  1. Before collecting your sample

    Do not eat, drink, chew gum, brush your teeth, smoke, or use nicotine for 30 minutes before collecting your saliva.

    A small tip: gently chew (like you had something in your mouth) to activate saliva glands. Take your time – the better the quality, the more certain we’ll get enough DNA for accurate genotyping.

  2. Open the collection tube

    Inside the kit, find the tube with the blue cap.

    Remove the blue cap and keep it nearby – you’ll need it again later.

  3. Prepare the tube and spit

    Attach the funnel to the top of the empty saliva collection tube. Spit into the funnel until the clear saliva (not bubbles) reaches the 2 ml line on the tube.

    The 2 ml mark is slightly below halfway up the tube. Keep the funnel attached for the next step.

  4. Add the Preservation Solution

    Find the tube with the red cap – that’s the Preservation Solution.

    Remove the red cap and pour all the liquid into the collection tube (the one now containing your saliva). Make sure the solution goes in completely.

  5. Close and mix your sample

    Remove the funnel and screw the blue cap tightly back onto the tube. Shake the tube well for 15 seconds to mix the saliva with the preservative solution.

    You can now discard the funnel and red-capped tube.

  6. Pack your sample and return it to us

    Your saliva sample is now ready to return!

    Place the blue-capped tube back into the clear plastic holder inside the box. Place the clear box inside the cardboard box – the same box works as your return package.

    Close the cardboard box securely using the two included stickers, and drop simply drop the sealed box in your nearest post box. Return shipping is already paid for.
