I. The American Revolution
a. The French and Indian War
i. 1753, Virginia Governor sent troops to Ohio River Valley for a battle. Troops failed.
ii. First skirmish of a major war that lasted until 1763.
iii. British fought against the French and their Native American allies.
iv. Late 1758, British troops won the war. Treaty of Paris signed in 1763, turning over Canada to British.
b. Events Leading to the American Revolution
i. Citizens believed they had every right to be regarded as full-fledged citizens of a great empire; British had no intentions of treating colonists as equals.
ii. New British Policies
1. Sugar Act - Taxed foreign imported molasses
2. Stamp Act - First direct taxation of colonists. Taxed legal and commercial documents and printed matter.
3. Quartering Act - Required colonial assemblies to house and provision the British soldiers.
4. Declaratory Act - A statement of England's right to rule the colonies in any way it saw fit.
5. Townshend Acts - Import taxes on lead, paper, tea, paint, and glass. Revenue supported soldiers and paid for positions of leadership.
6. Tea Act - Created to save the ailing East India Company. Forced colonists to buy tea from that company.
7. Intolerable Acts - Pretty much laid down the law and attempted to show the colonists who was boss and that their acts of rebellion would not be tolerated.
iii. The Colonist' Response
1. The colonists were angered greatly about having no representation in Parliament.
2. First Continental Congress was formed.
iv. A Plea For Peace
1. Colonists asked King George for understanding.
2. "Blows must decide" the outcome of the issue.
v. Fighting at Lexington and Concord
1. British troops marched to Concord and Lexington in an attempt to seize weapon stocks. Lexington was a push over, and British troops burned weapons at Concord. Upon return, 4,000 patriots opened fire on British troops.

1. The colonies decided it was time to cut their ties to Britian in June 1776.
2. Thomas Jefferson wrote declaration of Independence.
3. Adopted on July 4th.
iii. The Final Battle
1. Battle of Yorktown in 1781.
a. British led by General Lord Cornwallis.
b. American-French forces blocked Cornwallis off from all directions and Cornwallis surrendered and army of 8,000 soldiers.
c. Treaty of Paris signed in 1783, established independence of the United States and officially defined the nation's borders.
d. The Effects of the Revolution
i. Americans moved towards equality of people and went by Jefferson's declaration of Independence.
