  • Black Hole Wizard

[My great friend and sometimes collaborator Eliza Gauger is starting a new comics series with writer Simon Berman called Black Hole Wizard.][link] Official info is scant thus far, but:

    >Created by writer, Simon Berman and artist, Eliza Gauger, Black Hole Wizard is a comic book series that explores the weirder recesses of science fiction and fantasy, the droning soundscapes of doom metal, and the new aesthetics of 21st Century occultism.

There’s some pretty cool fan art coming out already.

  • Tom Spurgeon on Comic-Con 2012

[There are important thoughts and rumination, here, I think. A few choice pull-quotes:][link]

    >comics at its worst adopts a consumer’s myopia where everything is colored by whether or not one’s own appetites are being met, and how, and to what extent.

    and

    >The central dilemma of writing about something like San Diego Con is that you want to make strong choices in terms of what it all means, but doing so is ridiculous. It’s not blind men describing an elephant by touching an isolated part of its body; it’s blind men discussing the quality of being enjoyed by an elephant after touching an isolated part of its body.

I went this year, on Saturday, and I’m still somewhat decompressing.

  • Marvel Comics Actively Supports SOPA

[Disappointing, but not surprising.][link] Marvel is shit-scared of piracy, and instead of finding ways to make their comics better/more interesting/more apt to be purchased, they spend their time and money on disgusting legislation like SOPA. Really, they’re no different than the movie or music industry. They’ll fuck you as hard as they can to eek out one little *potential* point of revenue.

  • Annotations to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 1969

[Jess Nevins’ annotations add so much to every book he does them for that I consider feel sorry for every book without any of his annotations available][link]. I first came across his work with [Neil Gaiman’s limited series 1602][1602] and I’m glad I did.

    [1602]: http://www.enjolrasworld.com/Jess%20Nevins/1602/16021.html “Jess Nevin’s 1602 annotations”

If you haven’t bought any of the books yet, now is as good a time as any to buy them on AmazonImage, and give me a small kickback in the process.

  • Happy Jack Mulraney, the Joker of the 19th century.

[From the indispensable blog of Jess Nevins][link]:

    >Still another Gopher of distinction was Happy Jack Mulraney, so called because he always appeared to be laughing. However, his smile was caused by a partial paralysis of the muscles of his face. In reality Happy Jack was a verjuiced person and very sensitive about his deformity; when his chieftains wished to enrage him against an enemy they told him that slighting remarks had been made about his permanent grin. Happy Jack was finally sent to prison for the murder of Paddy the Priest, who owned a saloon in Tenth avenue and was a staunch friend of Happy Jack’s until he asked the gangster why he did not laugh on the other side of his face. Happy Jack then shot him and for good measure robbed the till.

  • Intellectual Property, Copyright Law, and Fan Art

A primer for the uninitiated and the knowledgable alike:

Technically, this means fan art, fan music, and fan fictions are illegal in and of themselves because they are derivative works of protected content.

    r o f l

But before you get your panties all in a bunch, it’s pretty clear that no creative entity in their right mind gives a shit.

  • A Letter From Lois Lane

Joanne Siegel, widow of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, passed away on February 12th of this year. [She’d been working on writing a letter to Time Warner’s CEO, Jeffrey L. Bewkes.][link]

Joanne is widely known to be the inspiration for Lois Lane, and even at 93 she fit the part. Time Warner’s action in all of this has been gross.
