Finished Creatures

Finished Creatures is an independent, not for profit, printed magazine, carefully produced with an eye for originality and beauty.

We publish poetry that is new and restless: poems that observe the small details of human and non-human beings with equal attention and affinity, and poems that may pose urgent questions regarding environmental and social justice.  Here you will find poets engaging with the realities of climate distress and civil fragility, while drawing upon myth, science and personal experience.

issue nine: trespass

This extraordinary selection of poems takes the reader to places where infringements of all kinds occur, and where resistance finds a voice, whether human or harrier: ‘. . . my clouds and ground, my nest. Six warm eggs / I’ll blind anything that breathes too close to them.’

There are poems of colonisation and conflict; of invasive species and wrongful intrusions.  Humans maraud across the planet and into the territories of wildlife and wilderness, yet they are also trespassed against: contained and abused by self and others.  ‘Each savage choice is somehow yours and mine.’

Much is airborne – bats, bombs, birds of many species – but there are also broken wings and extinctions.  On the ground, these poems agitate and push back against fences and borders: they reveal human spirit and nature’s defiance in the face of incursion.

issue eight: edge

issue eight: edge

This eighth issue of Finished Creatures asks the reader to travel to some extraordinary and restless places, ‘draws us to peer over the edge’, visit remote islands, outcrops and shorelines, or skate on thin ice. Many of these poems live on the brink, or bear the scars of both human and elemental unease as we hold on to ‘juts of earth.’ and try to shapeshift, flatten to a reflection, or ‘slip sideways’ to fit ‘the space between.’

issue seven: shelter

In this beautiful issue, 57 poets consider shelter as a right, instinct and necessity; as canopies, caves, earths, nests and dens. What emerges is an understanding of shelter as sanctuary, love and security.  In open landscapes and wild weather, all species are looking for cover and comfort.  We keep trying our best to find a safe place, and to invite others in.

issue six: pressure

This striking collection invites the reader to inhabit different ages and elements; to oscillate between past and future and to emerge from glaciers, bogs, oceans, floods and fires.  We are drawn into places of foreboding and unease which can be personal or meteorological, literal or metaphorical.  Amid all this there are anchors and constants: the small important observations of daily life, the intricate beauty of the environment, and the endurance of optimism, bravery, humour and love.
