Two major flash problems

Right, so I'm trying to create a web site in Flash for an assignment and it's not going so well.

To start I'm working in Flash MX on a Mac.

First problem is trying to get dynamic text to show up under a mask. I've found this which says all I need to do is to embed the font outlines using the character button under the Property Inspector, but I can't get that to work either. If you can follow these directions and get it to work, can you help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?

Second problem is I'm trying to get two layers to move using similar actionscript when buttons are clicked. I've got my main contact layer to move correctly, but when I started trying to get my sidebar information to do the same, the actionscript on the contact layer no longer worked. Is there no way to have buttons referenced in actionscript in two different places and have the buttons control both?

I know this is a lot to ask without giving any kind of introduction, but I promise to help anyone that I can later if anyone can help me out with this.

My professor has a copy of my code and he's trying to help me as well, but I'm so new to this stuff that I'm just going nuts.

EDIT: Found away around the dynamic text masking mess. So yeah.. the actionscript stuff still needs major help
