Desktop Icons: Mac/PC

I know this probably isn't the right community to post in, but I'm hoping someone has some background in icon creation. I'm using flash projector as a launch menu for some Internet software that will be distributed on CD. I'm having a problem compiling a really good icon for our product. It usually comes out with rough edges and on Macintosh platforms the transparency turns black. If anyone can direct me to some good reference material or perhaps another community I would appreciate it.
