Gifs?

Hey, I'm fairly new at flash and I have a quick question.

Why is it that when you publish gifs the colors always change from what you want and look like shit? Is it possible to fix this? I know I've seen gifs (like livejournal icons) that come out crisp and good looking. I looked around a bit and gave up, so some help would be awesome. Thanks alll
