Initially, FNF was just a small project for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam contest in October 2020 with the theme "Stuck in a loop." Unexpectedly, that simple prototype received overwhelmingly positive feedback, prompting the development team to create a full-fledged game. After launching on Newgrounds and itch.io, FNF quickly went viral on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Twitch. The game now boasts over 200 million players worldwide and has become the most played game in Newgrounds history.

What's special is that FNF is open-source, allowing the community to create thousands of unique mods. Even now, our website fnf.lol continues to update weekly with new FNF mods created by players. This is what keeps FNF fresh and continues to receive unceasing popularity from the gaming community!

Unique storyline and vibrant music

The FNF story revolves around Boyfriend's journey to prove himself worthy of Girlfriend. Each week, he faces different opponents in rap battles:

Week 1 - Daddy Dearest

Girlfriend’s father—an incredibly powerful former rock star. He is determined to stop this relationship at all costs. The three songs this week are:

• Bopeebo: A gentle warm-up with a cheerful funk rhythm.

• Fresh: Increases the speed and difficulty slightly.

• Dad Battle: The decisive showdown against Daddy Dearest.

Week 2 - Spooky Month

Boyfriend meets two adorable boys, Skid and Pump, amidst a Halloween atmosphere. Despite their cute appearance, these two are no pushovers! This week features spooky rhythms with:

• Spookeez: An energetic Halloween track.

• South: Continuing the eerie vibe.

• Monster: A terrifying creature suddenly appears with a haunting melody.

Week 3 - Pico

An encounter with Pico—the legendary mascot of Newgrounds and also Boyfriend’s ex (officially confirmed!). Pico was hired by Daddy Dearest to "handle" Boyfriend but ultimately ends up saving him from death in Week 7.

Week 4 - Mommy Must Murder

This time, it’s Girlfriend’s mother’s turn—Mommy Mearest—to join the fray. She is just as glamorous and dangerous:

• High: Increasing the tension.

• M.I.L.F: An iconic track that became a viral sensation!

Week 5 - Red Snow

A Christmas special! Boyfriend faces off against both parents, and the terrifying Monster makes an appearance:

• Eggnog: Similar to a traditional Christmas song.

• Winter Horrorland: Monster returns with a spine-chilling melody.

Week 6 - Hating Simulator

A special week featuring 8-bit pixel art style! Boyfriend is trapped inside a dating sim and must face Senpai:

Week 7 - Tankman

Daddy Dearest takes Boyfriend and Girlfriend to a war zone, where they face Captain Tankman:

• Guns: Gunshots echo everywhere.

• Stress: Pico returns to help and wipes out Tankman’s army!

WeekEnd 1 - Due Debts

A new update featuring Boyfriend and Pico against Darnell—an old friend from Pico’s School:

• Darnell: A face-off against the fire-wielder.

• Lit Up: The tension escalates.

• 2Hot: Everything goes up in flames!"

FNF Gameplay Details

Exciting Gameplay

You play as Boyfriend – a guy with blue hair and a red baseball cap. Your mission is to defeat your opponents in rap battles. Opponents will sing a musical note pattern represented by arrows, and you must imitate by pressing the correct notes corresponding to those arrows.

Winning Objective: At the bottom of the screen is a "tug-of-war" health bar. Each time you press the correct note, the health bar tilts towards you. Pressing the wrong note or missing a note will tilt the health bar towards your opponent. If the health bar tilts completely towards your opponent, you lose and have to play again. Surviving until the end of the song means you win!

Failure: When the health bar is completely depleted, Boyfriend will fall down and a Game Over screen will appear. You can press Enter to try again or Esc to exit to the menu.

The game has two main modes:

• Story Mode: Play weekly with a storyline, each week featuring 3 consecutive songs. You must win all 3 songs to pass the week.
• Freeplay: Practice each song one at a time, choose your own difficulty level - perfect for improving your skills.

Easy Controls

Basic Controls:

• Arrow keys (←↑↓→) or WASD to tap in rhythm
• Enter to select from the menu
• Esc to exit or pause the game
• - and + keys to decrease/increase volume
• 0 key to mute

How to play: There will be 4 fixed arrows at the top of the screen. The movable arrows will glide from bottom to top. When a movable arrow matches a fixed arrow, press the corresponding key. Precise timing is key!

Scoring Mechanism

FNF not only requires you to "survive" but also evaluates accuracy. The goal is to press as accurately as possible and hold the combo for as long as possible to achieve a high score!
Each note you press will be evaluated according to 4 accuracy levels:

• Sick! (perfect) - +350 points
• Good - +200 points
• Bad - +100 points
• Shit - +50 points
• Miss - 0 points and lose health

Combos and Bonus Points:

• When you maintain a combo sequence (press consecutively without error), your score will be multiplied.
• The longer the combo, the higher the bonus points.
• If you miss, the combo will be reset to 0.

Tips for Winning Every Rap Battle

After replaying dozens of times to win every week in FNF, we've compiled some helpful tips for beating FNF and its numerous mods. Here are some tips to help you easily defeat any opponent in rap battles:

1. Practice in Free Play mode first: This is the most important tip. This mode allows you to practice each song individually before participating in Story Mode. Once you've mastered the rhythm of each song, jump straight into Story Mode and you'll be surprised at what you can achieve!
2. Focus on rhythm over visuals: Each song has a strong rhythm or distinctive melody. Let the rhythm guide your timing instead of relying solely on visuals. Feel the melodies; they will lead you to what to do next faster than looking at each arrow.
3. Use both hands: In climactic sections with fast-paced rhythms, we found that you can't play this game with just one hand. Divide the controls between your left and right hands to press the notes simultaneously. I usually use my left hand for the A/D keys to keep up with the left/right notes, and my right hand for the up/down arrow keys to tap along with the up/down rhythm of the song. Especially during the song, keep four fingers fixed on those keys. This will help you avoid confusion and be able to tap each note perfectly.
4. Adjust the difficulty level: The game offers three difficulty levels: easy, medium, and hard. You can set the difficulty level to suit your ability. Don't jump straight to Hard if you're not familiar with the mechanics. If you're a beginner, I recommend starting with Easy, then gradually increasing to Normal and Hard; this will help you enjoy the game better.
5. Stay calm during fast-paced songs: As the speed increases, it's easy to panic. Breathe deeply, focus, and believe in your abilities.
6. Watch videos of skilled players: Learn how they handle difficult sections to apply to your gameplay.
