Hello! It's been like 7 years since I did Yuletide but I'm excited to be getting back into it this year. I'm so excited to read whatever it is you want to write!

DNWs: Humiliation, non-con, mpreg, character-bashing (esp. bashing of lady characters), non-canonical death, daddy kink, body-shaming, infantilism, petplay, terminal illness, or unhappy endings.

General likes: As you will definitely be able to tell from my chosen fandoms, I LOVE found family and codependence and characters who know each other really fucking well. Also: competence, pining, hurt/comfort, messy emotions, unexpected relationships, people complementing each other in different ways, character studies, tropes, weird experimental storytelling, outside POV, multimedia.

Oh man. I'm so excited that this time is already upon us!

Obviously, optional details are optional — I'm just thrilled that we've matched on one of these fandoms, and I can't wait to see what you come up with. If it helps having some points to bounce off of, though, I've got some longer rambling below!

General Likes:
  • Happy endings! I love it when the characters I love get the love they deserve. Angst is great and good as long as everything gets worked out in the end (possibly with some cuddling).
  • Found family and codependence and people knowing each other really, really well!
  • Banter of pretty much any variety
  • Competence! I love reading about people being really, really good at things. (Even if they're complete disasters in other aspects of their life. Flawed characters are great!)
  • Pining, because who DOESN'T live pining
  • Some good tropes: magical realism, woke up married, fake dating, so domestic they're basically dating and don't realise, breakup/makeup, external pov
Here for funny stuff, serious stuff, and everything in between. I mostly love AUs, although there are a few specific fandoms where I'd prefer in-universe fic. I also have a lot of ships, which you'll see in the fandom specific section (and both get-together and established relationship fics are great), but if you're not feeling it, don't worry! I am 100% absolutely into gen for all of these options too. Friendship fic? Character studies? Fake academic pieces? External POV? It's all good.

Quick List of Dislikes:
Just to get it out of the way: Blanket DNW: Humiliation, infidelity, non-con, mpreg, character-bashing (esp. bashing of lady characters), non-canonical death, daddy kink, body-shaming, infantilism, petplay, or unhappy endings.

OK COOL. Moving on!

YAY. I know nothing about you and I'm already SO PSYCHED that we got matched up on one of these fandoms! I already know I'm going to love whatever you write by sheer dint of the fact that you're writing it for me, but if you want a few bouncing off points:

General likes:

  • Happy endings. I am really, really big on happy endings where the people we love get all of the love they deserve. (With one possible exception which I'll go into below in the Whatever. section, but that's very canon-specific.)

  • Competence! In all sorts of things — just people being very, very good at whatever they choose to do

  • Banter and flirting

  • Domesticity/people knowing each other really well in the little things/people expressing love through small things as well as big

  • Found family and (...mostly healthy) codependence, and people who love each other intensely but also are happy to poke fun at each other — whether that love is platonic or romantic

  • People who are sad and lonely or don't realise how great they are getting appreciated
Other stuff: I love funny stuff, serious stuff, and everything in between. Tropes, trope subversion, mixed media, epistolary/fake articles, plot-heavy stories, character studies, genderswap, AUs, world-building, porn, gen, awesome ladies, first-time, established relationship — so here for it as long as there's a happy/hopeful ending.
DNW: Humiliation, infidelity, non-con or dub-con, mpreg, character-bashing (esp. bashing of lady characters), non-canonical death, daddy kink.

Dear Seeing Color creator,

Hi! Sorry this is a smidge late. I'm really, really excited to see whatever you come up with — all the characters I've nominated are characters I adore, and I'm thrilled to see whatever you do with them. Optional details are optional! If there's an idea that's grabbed your brain, go for it.

First things first: YOU ARE AWESOME AND I LIKE YOU, and also this is extra exciting because it is the VERY FIRST TIME I have ever done Yuletide and also you got matched with me on some super random shit so I LIKE YOU EVEN MORE ALREADY, this is a whole bright new world of weirdness to explore. Come say hi if you need anything! I am on tumblr here: http://nonimaginaryfriend.tumblr.com and my askbox is open to anons.

General stuff: I am really, really big on happy endings. Reeeeeeeeally big. This is pretty much the most important thing, the other stuff is just details.

Likes: MANY THINGS. FEEL FREE TO GO WILD. Some guarantees are banter, people being really good at things, found families, flirting, codependence, awesome ladies, magical realism, genderswap, character studies, pining, breakup/makeup, sarcasm, domesticity (accidental or otherwise), people knowing each other really well, tropes subversions, etc. etc. AUs and canon-based fic are both great! Romance or gen is also great! Get together vs established relationship is also also great! It can be serious or funny or darkly funny or angsty or whatever, it's all good as long as everything turns out okay in the end.

DNW: Humiliation, infidelity, non-con, mpreg, a/b/o unless reeeeeally subverted, character-bashing (esp. bashing of lady characters), death.

ON TO THE FANDOM-SPECIFIC STUFF.

Hey guys! So it's been a while, obvs. This is just a general post to tell you that these days you can find me on tumblr at nonimaginaryfriend; all new fic will be uploaded to formerlydf at AO3, and I'm working on uploading some old stuff as well! When I get around to it. Because I am lazy.
formerlydf: (Brendon! Foot!)
SO I HAVE NOT POSTED ANYTHING HERE IN A WHILE

BUT FALL OUT BOY
formerlydf: (Default)
Just for the sake of aggregation. Also because I apparently can't stand for people not to know how crazy I am?

So, uh. I have not!fic about a win and not!fic about a loss, both Kaner/Tazer. Man, sometimes I judge myself.

winning! )

losing(sadness) )

OH ALSO I HAVE A TUMBLR NOW.

I... figure I should mention that. Or something. Mostly it's the Avengers, with a little bit of hockey and some assorted other things, but! If you want to see my rambling across multiple electronic platforms, hie yourself over to nonimaginaryfriend.

I’ve been writing this for a while now, but seeing the midnight show of the Avengers prompted me to stay up way too late actually finishing the last few sections. It’s more than a little ridiculous that this is the first proper fic I post in more than a year, I know; you would at least think that I could manage to break my losing streak with something slightly less pretentious, wouldn’t you?

(Seriously, you guys, this is so ridiculous that I'm actually a little embarrassed for myself, but whatever, Avengers.)

No spoilers, by the way. In case you were concerned.

Title: Only When You Hit The Ground
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: Neither real nor mine.
Summary: “Daddy issues,” they whisper, like that explains everything. (Loki, Tony, and everything else.)
Also the very first fic I have posted on AO3!

In the end, it always comes back to the fall. )

Someone's written a fic where the Doctor is just Calvin (from Calvin & Hobbes) all grown up, right? Or where Calvin has a broken pocket watch buried in the debris of his room and is secretly a Time Lord?

...And yes, I did get this idea from the quote describing the Doctor and the Tardis as "a boy and his box."
formerlydf: (Default)
So this is actually not inspired by What If Star Wars: Episode 1 Was Actually Good, although that video is awesome and everyone should watch it. Mostly, though, I think it comes from watching TV/movies and reading books from a writer’s perspective, which inevitably leads you to think about the decisions the creators have made, why they might have made them, and whether you would have done something else instead. Because that’s part of how we learn from other writers, right?

it comes from the fact that when I watch(/read) something that I feel like isn’t necessarily living up to its potential, I always have to ask myself what I would do differently. I spent a lot of time thinking about this for Glee during the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2, but at this point Glee is just so absurd that I’ve pretty much given up on it. (Seriously, though, there was a period of time where after every episode, I would make a comment starting with, “Well, if I were writing the show...” I had different plans depending on whether I was just rewriting the single episode in my head, or whether I was starting from the very beginning and rewriting the show completely — which would have been great, okay, there would have been an awesome Kurt/Mike subplot that would build slowly and only start coming to fruition at the end of season 2 or so, and hey, CONSISTENT CHARACTERIZATION AND ACTUAL FRIENDSHIPS SHOWN ONSCREEN, that could have been cool too, but whatever. I’m not masochistic enough to get back into the “But it could have been so much better!” mindset.)

Anyway, so I’ve been enjoying Once Upon A Time to a certain extent, but I have... more than a few problems with it, let’s just put it that way. Which is not meant to disparage the writers, because they have a hard job! And I am not trying to insinuate that I am a better writer than they are, because that’s reeeeally not true. And every time I try to re-plot the show in my head I have a new appreciation for how hard it must be to write a show that continually switches between a set of closed storylines and an open storyline, when the former are influencing the latter but none of the characters involved actually realize it, especially when you have ten million characters with ten million narratives going on.

That said, though, there are some things that I feel like I would do differently. And I guess the first one, because it’s been bugging me ever since the pilot, is the character of Henry.

Yeah, I really didn't actually get beyond discussing Henry in this post, so... here, have a few pages-worth of me rambling on about parts of his characterisation. )

I don't know if this just occurs in the specific tumblrs I lurk on (tumblrs which I lurk? where I lurk? grammar should hurry up and catch up to the internet), or if it's something that I've just started noticing a lot more with tumblr (because it allows for different modes of sharing and visibility than LJ, seriously, I could talk about this stuff all day), but I've been really amused recently by the fact that while a lot of fandom/slash fandom tends to be all over the bromance in what we flail over (Avengers, Hawaii 5-0, Sherlock, TSN, I don't know why I'm listing things because you guys clearly know this already), members of the fandom? Tend to be all about the inter-fan sromance.

(God, that's an awkward word.)

Seriously, I keep on seeing all these tumblrs where Epic Female-Identified Platonic Love Affairs are going on. Some of them are so epic that other fans ship it. Many of them have portmanteau names. Often, it's epic intercontinental affairs that seem to end up being conducted with much pining and many, many displays of overt affection and codependence. Basically, if these people were white dudes on a TV show, they would have spawned a thousand million fics already.

(On a related note, someone really needs to tell me that writing an anthro thesis about bromance is an awful idea, both in the "writing a thesis is crazy" sense and in the "bromance? seriously?" sense.)

I don't know; I guess it's kind of nice to see, considering that I get depressed sometimes at how misogynist (and a hell of a lot of other -ists) parts of fandom can be at times. Although I have also decided it means that popular media should start showing more intense non-cis!male friendships, because I was trying to think of other TV shows with/featuring sromances and I could pretty much only come up with Rizzoli&Isles and 2 Broke Girls. Help me out here, people.

(Also, you win, HK. I'm pretty sure I have given in and am going to get a tumblr at some point, because I've already started considering names. I am strongly contemplating "hksimaginaryfriend," in fact...)
formerlydf: (Default)
So basically the latest fics that I've written (and "finished") are a tiny Glee AU where Kurt and Mercedes own a cake decorating store à la Ace Of Cakes, for an RL friend of mine (well, she's in fandom, obviously, but I met her in RL first) who bugs me about actually writing the random snippets I like to text her at random during the day, and then this ridiculous Kane/Toews notfic that's barely anything at all and that I dumped anonymously in a tumblr askbox. BECAUSE I AM THE CLASSIEST. Also because things are more fun when they're anon.

I... don't even know what to do with myself? And I have a feeling that somewhere out there, [livejournal.com profile] hapakitsune is weeping bitter, bitter tears of "JUST WRITE SOME FREAKING TSN FIC ALREADY" frustration.

I mean, I've worked a little bit on robot!Mark, but it doesn't really have a plot and I'm wondering if it's getting boring, and I occasionally go back to the pretentious Avengers fic, but I have to be in a properly pretentious mood for that so I can make sure my sentences are pretentious enough while still, you know, sort of making sense. A little bit. Or at the very least, not being repetitively pretentious in any way that isn't purposeful.

(Also apparently my school expects me to decide on my classes for next year? And I'm just like, "AHAHAHA I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU'RE EXPECTING ME TO THINK ABOUT NEXT YEAR WHEN I AM STILL DROWNING IN THIS YEAR'S WORKLOAD." College is awesome, you guys.)

Anyway, I am going to try to be a little less of a fic failure this year than I was last year, but for now I'm just going to post the hockey!rpf Fic That Wasn't. Because seriously, you guys, this is barely a fic. It's only tenuously holding on to the vaguest ficcish tendencies.

Really I just want to make sure that it's not lost in the swamp of Things That Disappear In Tumblrland. )
formerlydf: (Default)
Flist, I'm having an ethical dilemma.

Okay, so long story short: if you've hung around this journal for long enough, you probably know that I really like writing academic papers about pop culture and internet culture, although to date I've avoided delving too thoroughly into fanfic, etc. — sticking to some of the shallower aspects of fandom.

The deal is that I have to write a final paper for one of my anthro classes about transgressions and limitations in some form or another. (I have a lot of choices on whether I want it to be more theoretical or more ethnographic, based on real communities.) My main ideas were: slut-shaming (linguistically punishing women for going beyond their approved boundaries); anonymity on the internet (in the sense that it lets you say things you wouldn't say if your face were attached, but also in the expectations attached to online personas and the fact that outing is seen as a major crime); online piracy (as theft vs progress); and certain aspects of fandom (the way it's something we tend to keep to ourselves, the taboo against showing it to the creators of the source material, and the way it often gets reduced by non-fandom people who stumble into it, including reduction along the lines of "oh, those silly fangirls writing their silly porn," etc).

My professor seemed most interested in the anonymous thing and the fandom thing — especially the fandom thing — but after our meeting I realized that, well. I'm going to have to present this shit in front of my class, and turn it in to a professor who has no real understanding of fandom. Am I just opening fandom up to the same kind of (potentially negative) scrutiny that we try so hard to avoid? Should I just choose something else and avoid outing myself as a ficcer?

Yesterday (Sunday the 25th) was my 7th anniversary of being on LiveJournal. Isn't that crazy? It feels crazy, anyway — crazy enough that I'm actually posting something on my ghost-town journal. I was 13, back then, obsessed with the Ocean's 11 fandom. Now I'm 20 and in college and I just feel so far away from 13-year-old me. (Especially when I look at the fic I wrote back then, holy crap. Then again, I sometimes have a hard time reading anything I've written that's more than a year old — which I guess is a problem right now because I pretty much haven't written any fic in a year? I really need to work on that, as [livejournal.com profile] hapakitsune keeps reminding me.)

It's just... odd. I feel like I've grown up on LJ. Not even "sort of" grown up — this has flat-out been one of the most important, influential places in my life for the past seven years.

Ugh. It's ridiculously late and I'm getting sappy, or something. Seven years just seems like a ridiculously long time; I thought I should acknowledge it.
formerlydf: (Default)
So I just saw this Sherlock video (WARNING for spoilers), and now I just really want a Sherlock/Inception crossover

And I don't even know how it would work, honestly. Or anything. I mean, the obvious choice is to have Sherlock be the dreamer and to have his mind create John and Moriarty, because hey, perfect best friend and perfect antagonist, blah blah blah

but

I kind of want John to be the dreamer

I DON'T EVEN KNOW, OKAY, I just have feelings about John and post-TRF angst and I want to stop having these feelings and just go back to watching Veronica Mars. Because I desperately need to finish the first two seasons so I can know what happens and also start reading fic already.
formerlydf: (Default)
Ugh. So, okay, people of the internet (or at least my flist). Do you know if Pinboard is the best bookmarking site out there? Google bookmarks is okay, but it's a little clunky, although I suppose I might just need to learn to use it with a little more finesse. I don't need a social bookmarking site, necessarily, I just want to be able to search using multiple tabs so that I can plug in fandom and pairing, or multiple ingredients for recipes, etc. Pinboard seems nice, from what I've heard, but I don't know if it's worth spending ~$10 joining up. Opinions, anyone?
