Decrease an issue

Hello
I have a feeling that "decrease" can't go with "issue"/ I mean we can't say in order to decrease the issue... am I right? is there an alternative except for "solve" ?
Thank you in advance

  • Please give us the complete sentence, and explain the situation in which you would use it.
It is a problem solution essay , I have already mentioned that video games can lead to a number of health issues and the fact that children who play video games excessively are prone to depression and social isolation, now I am developing another paragraph to provide a viable solution to this problem, I have started my paragraph as follows
"A possible solution to decrease this issue is to set a limit for the amount of time children can spend on computers."
I think "solve a problem" or to "tackle the issue" or even "alleviate the situation" are probably good options but just want to make sure "decrease the issue" is wrong

    Increase/decrease = make bigger/smaller

But an issue doesn’t have a size so the word is inappropriate. Solve is not the right word either. We normally solve a problem but resolve an issue.

Thank you it makes sense, what do you think about these other options I have listed... "solve a problem" or to "tackle the issue" or "alleviate the situation" are they any good?

They all work, yes. But to tackle an issue only means to do something about it – it doesn’t mean resolving it. Likewise with alleviate the situation – it only means make it less serious than it was.

I agree with what lingobingo says about solving problems and resolving issues, but setting a limit to the amount of time children can spend on computers is not a resolution of the issue; it is merely a response to the issue that may or may not work - so I suggest "A possible response to this issue is to set a limit ..."
