  1. http://puu.sh/s4Krc.png xedit-lib Description xedit-lib is a project to build a DLL Wrapper for the xEdit framework. This will allow developers in the TES/FO modding communities to make use of xEdit's record definitions and functionality to read and write plugin files from the language of their choice. Developers can then focus on implementing larger solutions rather than constantly re-inventing the wheel. The library will include extensive documentation, a full suite of tests, and plug-and-play wrappers for multiple programming languages. The languages which I plan on building wrappers for, in order of priority, are listed below: - Delphi (primarily for testing) - Javascript (with NodeJS) - C# - Python - C++ - Ruby - Java Design The library will be designed similar to xEdit scripting, though with a number of notable improvements. A primary goal is to yield enough functionality from the library to create a full GUI application as an alternative to TES5Edit at a future point in time. It's also important to return arrays from library functions so users can use functional programming paradigms for iteration, filtering, mapping, etc. All functions in the library will use the cdecl calling convention for maximum accessibility. All functions will use boolean return values to indicate whether or not the function executed correctly. All functions are internally wrapped in an exception handler which prevents exceptions from bubbling up to the calling application (which results in runtime errors). The library will allow applications to load multiple load orders without having to unload the DLL. The library will never directly pass out interfaces to files, records, groups, or elements. Instead, when an interface would be returned from a function the library instead stores the interface in an internal list and passes out an index (or handle) to the stored value. The calling application can release a single handle, or reset the entire interface store between extremely large operations. This should not be an issue, as the limit for handles is ~4 billion, which could only be reached if you loaded ~4GB of plugins or stored all elements in all loaded plugins multiple times over. We would run out of RAM accessible to the 32-bit DLL before we would run out handles. The library will feature extensive serialization methods, which will allow users to serialize and deserialize elements, records groups, or even entire plugins to/from JSON, XML, and YAML. Progress You can track my progress on the library from the GitHub repository. The planning document shows an overview of the functions that have been implemented and have not been implemented. As of 11/2/2016, I'm close to being halfway done implementing the library itself. Once the library itself is implemented, I will be working on the testing suite and wrappers for different programming languages. If you are a software developer and would like to help make this project happen sooner, please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate any help the community can offer me on this project. Use Cases I envision a number of use cases for this project, including patching, automation, resolving plugin errors, and building new mods. This project is, in many ways, a spring board from which many other projects can be made. I personally plan on making an Electron AngularJS application using this library. Working on Mod Picker has shown me that I really like the architecture and systems involved in web development, which are by my measure superior to desktop application development in many areas. (most notably GUI design) Please refer to the use cases document for more information about how I plan on using this library in the future. FAQ Q: What about Mator Smash and Merge Plugins? A: Those application will continue to be supported and developed. While fighting with Delphi to get the GUI to act as I want is very tiring at times, the battle is mostly won for these applications. I do not currently plan on phasing out support for them any time soon, and I am looking forward to coming back to them to polish things off. It is possible that these applications may be "remastered" into Electron AngularJS applications using xedit-lib sometime in the distant future. Q: What about Mod Picker? A: Mod Picker is still my primary focus. I'm only working on xedit-lib in my off-hours. (~10 hours/week, where 60-90 hours a week goes to Mod Picker) Q: This is awesome, but I'm not a developer, how can I help? A: I don't have a job right now. I'm building modding tools full time right now. I'm hoping to continue doing this for the next 6 months, but when my funds dry up I will, inevitably, have to go out and get a Software Engineering position somewhere locally. If you'd like, you can donate to me on PayPal to support my efforts. Additionally, I greatly appreciate your feedback and encouragement on all of my projects. Q: Can you really match or exceed the xEdit GUI's functionality in a new application? A: Absolutely. xEdit has a fairly simple GUI, and building a GUI using HTML/CSS/JS is a heckuvalot faster, easier, flexible, and customizable compared to building a GUI with Delphi or another programming language. Q: When will you be done? A: I expect to have the library "completed" sometime in December. By Christmas at the latest. The GUI application will follow, with an alpha release ready for use by 2017. Things should be pretty solid by the end of February. This is all just estimations though, and really depends on how much time and work Mod Picker will require over the next few months.
  2. I am currently working on my first ever mod for skyrim but I hit a snag when it came down to textures. I am desperately trying to find some textures off the internet that isnt terrible. I was wondering if I could perhaps get some recommendations to some good texture websites. I literally have about 10 weapons models already made on blender and ready to be textured and would absolutely love to put them in the game! :D Thank you for the help :)
  3. I'm sure this has been brought up a dozen times, but I've been having this C++ Library crash doing Dawnguard missions. I've found a fix for it online by visiting Soul Cairn and collecting the pages, but I'm currently on the "PROPHET" quest and I've sided with the Dawnguard. Do I need to force a setstage quest completion, coc to soul cairn or anything like this to fix it? I see a lot of peeps have different theories on what actually causes the C++ lib crash, but I never encountered this issue before installing DG. I've reinstalled the game twice now, played with no mods, played with mods, it seems to be random but always happens in Fort Dawnguard or Castle Volkihar. Any suggestions?
  4. I usually build the storage room, but I never use it. I would like to have a children's room with six beds instead of the storage room. Someone has made a very nice mod with two beds and a very nice fireplace in there. (Uhhh, Aerym, Lakeview Manor Converted Storage Room for Kids). I want more beds because then I can expand the master bedroom on the first floor and add a fireplace and seating area and maybe some bookcases. (I like to house a lot of followers and children in my homes, so that's why I want so many children's beds, so my followers can use the ones on the second floor. The other thing that really bothers me is I hate the cramped small library option. I'm a book collector, so I like a lot of bookcases to display my books. I don't like the current option. I would like to use the armory wing, but make it a room with bookcases, and maybe a nice seating area for reading. (fireplace?) I am wililng to donate generously!!
  5. Hey guys, I'm not a modder, and I've never posted an idea here before. Perhaps this mod even exists already? If not, what do you think? To me, it sounds like fun. The idea: I've been thinking about an immersive, lore friendly, collaborative library. This library will be filled with books written by players. There'll be different shelves with different categories of books, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, exploration, biography, factions, people, dungeons, and so on. Very important is that the books pass as: Friendly to the Lore and are Immersively written. These are NOT "walkthroughs" or "guides" we'd find on the wikipedia for example, but rather books written by fellow players. - Books for different mods, like requiem, SkyRE, Vanilla etc. I'm a big fan of immersion, but I'm also a big fan of multiplayer, and Skyrim can feel lonely at times. I think this could only enrich my Skyrim experience, sharing tales and experiences. I see a lot of possibilities. - Immersive - Lore Friendly - Collaborative Library
  6. Hello there! So, recently I started playing Skyrim again, had some mods installed from a previous playthrough etc. Did a clean install, removed everything, installed Skyrim and mods and started up my game. After a few hours without CTDs (games been very stable with this setup) I quit the game and get the windows error sound, the beep sound and the following: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime error! Program C:\Games\Steam\Steamapps\common\skyrim\TESV.exe R6025 - pure virtual function call" Now, I've gotten this once during gameplay after loading my game and walking around for 1-2 minutes, otherwise I only get this after quitting the game and not for example if I CTD (which i do rarely) and if I open my console and type "qqq" which makes the game close itself. This isn't a big deal I suppose since it's only happening when I quit the game and not during gameplay, like some people get it from the Soul Cairn questline in Dawnguard. I'd just like to fix it, since it's annoying and I'm not sure if this is a thing I should be worried about. I also remember having this once during gameplay like over a year ago when Dawnguard was first released in Soul Cairn, but I believe I only got it once. And also I did another clean install AFTER my first error. Any help would be well appreciated
  7. I searched through all of the mods with the tag "Library" and I was disappointed. Much of what I saw was pretty basic and looked too much like any other area of Oblivion. The stone walls and architecture you see in the Imperial City gets old after a while and I was expecting to see something fresh with elaborate, custom meshes specifically tailored to the project; something with an eye for originality that makes anyone who enters the place want to stay for a while and perhaps... read a book. Here are some reference images to show what I mean: http://www.beautiful-libraries.com/library%20photos/home%20libraries%20english/3024.jpg http://www.businessenglishlibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/BusinessEnglishLibrary-org.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3b/Trinity_College_Library-words_in_leather_and_wood.jpg http://www.dreamhomedesignusa.com/images/Photoshop%20Images/Library%20paneling%20ceiling%20luxury%20house.jpg
  8. Exactly what the title says. IDEA: This idea would free up 1 to 2 wings by combining the function of the enchanting & alchemy towers, (and possibly, library, more on that below). The alchemy tower already has two floors: 1. Storage that I never touch, never look at, and never use. 2. The alchemy room which is nicely decorated and highly functional. CONCEPT TEST: I removed the furniture from the first floor room, and plunked down an enchanting table and a storage crate using Pocket Empire Builder. The result is functional, but not nice looking. I also explored the upper area (the open space above the second floor), and it's high enough for a 3rd floor. I used tundra defense or empire builder to put a floor in with some bookcases (which arent scripted, so dont store books), but the point is that it fits! REQUEST: Basic: Remove the clutter in 1st Floor of the Alchemy Tower, and make it into an enchanting room. Mebbe a cut & paste of the 2nd Floor of the Enchanting tower into the 1st Floor Alchemy Lab? This would be for the Lakeview location, any other locations that get upgraded would be icing on the cake. This does NOT need to be tied to the workbench, I'm so over that aspect, and if it just appears when the tower is built, that's fine by me. Ideal: The above, plus add a 3rd floor, accessible by the already existing ladder (or mebbe a trap door in the ceiling etc.) as a small library or, space permitting maybe single chair reading room/library. This floor should not interfere with access to the tower roof (or should assist in access). A possibility might be to cut and paste either the 1st or 2nd floor of the Library tower into this position, and add a hatch up to the roof of the alchemy tower? Again, Lakeview location, anything else is awesome. And there ya go, two free wings, one highly functional tower. Is anyone interested/able to make this happen?
  9. Hi, I recently got a new internal SSD to expand my laptop's storage and have a dedicated game drive. I've got ME2 Steam Deluxe Ed, almost all DLC, a bunch of small mods installed wia ME3Tweaks and ALOT + MEUITM2. Is there a way for me to migrate my entire game installation including the mods to the new SSD, or am I in for a troubleshooting headache and should I reinstall everything from scratch ? I know that with Steam and Vortex, migrating something like Skyrim will probably be effortless, but ME2 is not supported by Vortex and most installs I have are manual or through dedicated installers, not to mention DLC. Any advice ? Thanks in advance, P
  10. Hi, all! First time poster who's really nervous about discussing mods with all of you amazingly talented creators out there, so go easy on me, please. :ermm: And while I'm at it, a HUGE thank you to all of you for what you do. I play a heavily modded game and your work continues to make the game feel new to me after all of these years. So again, thank you. Sorry in advance, I know this is going to get very very long. But I've given a good bit of thought to this and would rather share all of that than just a few sentence summary. So this idea first came up when I last played a couple of years ago and I've been watching a lot of lore videos on youtube lately, so I'm again feeling this is a mod that really needs to be made. (Although when I start playing, I practically need a 12-step program to stop, so it's probably a really bad idea for me to be thinking about this...) I heavily RP when I play, so this initial description of why I would love this mod is going to be written in a RP style. Feel free to skip the indented text if you like. My character, a very young Nordic girl, led a very privileged life before the attack on Helgen, but during all of that chaos (during which her family was killed), she was kidnapped by bandits, who ultimately turned her in for a bounty in Windhelm claiming she was a thief. She was finally released when her innocence was discovered, but she lost everything. Her family was dead, she had not a septum to her name... but she was tougher than she realized, and she ended up not just surviving, but thriving in this terrifying world. How did she do this? Books. Books taught her how to protect herself, both offensively and defensively. (The book The Importance of Where she considers one of the most valuable books she read during that time, or perhaps even ever.) She had been sheltered from the harsh realities of the civil war, so she read every book she could find on the subject. She was sure there was a mistake when she was named Dragonborn, and again she turned to books, although initially they gave her no answers. She'd have been happy to give over the title to the one in Solstheim who also claimed it. She read every book she could get her hands on, and learned histories of areas, secrets of tombs... She took no orders from anyone - Greybeards, Blades, Jarls - without first learning all she could, and researched all that was available before starting any other quests, if she could find such information. And somewhere along the way, she did begin to understand why she had been chosen as the Dragonborn. Basically, my character spent as much time reading as she did adventuring, and it added such depth to the game! But I kept thinking there had to be a way to make her research easier (besides Google...) The topics of many of the books are obvious, but some aren't, and some connections only made sense upon a much later re-reading. She spent way more time flipping through wrong books before finding the right ones, then when something new would come up, could spend ages trying to remember where she read it. When you go to the College of Winterhold, Urag gro-Shub will bring you the books he has on Elder Scrolls if you are ready. I'd like to extend that to much more extensive areas of research. I have a very basic idea of how this could be done, but I would love to hear thoughts on this. Note that this isn't a mod request, I have made mods, just in the past they've been for personal use. I'm not looking for assistance, although obviously that would help get this out sometime in the next decade, but more thoughts at this point. Here are some of mine: The Topics: There are obviously websites that contain the text of the books. I'd think the easiest way to start would be to go through the books on a website or otherwise available list, and let people tag them with all of the topics they contain. I think multiple people would be best for this part, as information may fit together in ways not immediately apparent. Also, there are some amazing lore channels on youtube, and the depth with which they explore subjects makes me think they must have their own lists. I think this part would be a great collaboration for all of the Skyrim lore experts. Eventually the books would be added to various lists in the creation kit. How: I picture this as a library with an NPC. The character requests a topic, the NPC brings over all of the books on the topic. I found the Scholar's Library which seems like a perfect mechanism for something like this. The character doesn't get to keep the books, but simply puts them in a book return when finished so they are returned to their appropriate place for the next inquisitive adventurer. This could, of course, be expanded for the mods that add books from other Elder Scrolls games, and should be, although I admit I find the idea of actually adding all of those books individually to shelves a bit extremely daunting. Where: The idea came from the exchange in the College of Winterhold, and while that would be an ok place for it, this knowledge shouldn't be limited to mages. I keep thinking it would fit perfectly in the Legacy of the Dragonborn (Dragonborn Gallery) since that mod has you already collecting and displaying books, and it seems to fit perfect with that theme. Granted, that would mean it would be up to the player to find the books, which I alternately find appealing and limiting. I think you'd be long done with the game before you found every book, and I'd really like the focus to be more on learning lore, not chasing down books. And collaborating there (if the author were even interested) would obviously require downloading a huge mod that players might not want. I'm not sure if the Bard's College, even with their collection of books, is hugely focused on research, but that's another place I considered. And obviously, it could be a standalone building anywhere. Issues: The biggest issue I see is that this is going to be a HUGE mess of data entry. That's one reason it would be nice if other people joined in, if for no other reason to check each other's work. But for the most part, I know this is something I could do, it would just be a matter of time - lots and lots and lots of time. But the one problem I haven't solved in my head is how to present the available topics to the player. It's easy enough to ask an NPC to bring all the books that explain the war, or the legends of the Dragonborn, but all of the races have their own lore, as do all of the guilds, groups, etc. What if a character just wanted to research Ulfric Stormcloak? That also brings up the issue that not all lore is found in proper books. The information in the dossier at the Thalmor Embassy is also really important, but at the same time, it's meant to be found during a quest. Maybe the library provides books and players can provide extra material? I admit I'd even like to include letters and journals from individual quests. I think the Frostflow Lighthouse is one of the saddest stories in the game and those journals and letters deserve way more than to just be shoved on to a random shelf in a random player home. I'd like this to be a repository of all of the stories of Skyrim. Although that causes even more of a problem when it comes to asking an NPC for books on a subject. Probably better, the letters and journals found in-game and stories behind them could be put in a separate section, with perhaps extra info added if it is known. Basically, this could end up being kind of a in-game version of many of those "secrets of Skyrim" videos. And finally, all of the miscellaneous, or "fluff" books. I think every book probably has some important knowledge within, although I'm not sure where The Cabin in the Woods and The Lusty Argonian Maid belong as far as requesting information from an NPC. (That second series might belong in a curtained off section in the back of the library. LOL)So, thoughts? I know it's ambitious, but while I admit to not being an expert mod creator, I have done some pretty impressive (to me) things, and I've have been programming my entire life and ambitious doesn't scare me. But do you all think this is something enough players would want to make it worth the trouble? And, while, like I said, I didn't come here looking for assistance, but would anyone be interested in teaming up on something like this? Apologies again for the really long post. (Although maybe appropriate for a mod of this scope...) Comments very welcome. Just like I said, please go easy on me, I feel quite out of place among the great mod authors I know already hang out here.
  11. So i was thinking, would it be possible to add a heap of gameplay tips and location hints as lore-friendly books scattered throughout libraries made by other mods or custom made? For example, maybe your character gets attacked by a vampire and infected with vampirism, you could then go to the library and go to the 'V' section for vampires or 'P' for potions or poisons and then remedy the illness that way Or maybe you want to find all the stones of Barenziah, so you find a book that subtly mentions their general locations, instead of just finding their exact locations online, so it adds a bit of puzzle element but also being useful, kinda like a lore-friendly skyrim wiki but with the precise details omitted Obviously this is a bit of a niche, but it would add a lot to immersion i think, instead of alt-tabbing or using your phone to google something when you're stuck, you can go to the library looked around, but couldn't find anything like this anyone know how this would be done/is interested in doing this? cheers
  12. I recently had to delete and reinstall Skyrim. As I was re-downloading mods I couldn't find Scholar's Library. I searched using everything to describe it with no luck. I LOVE this mod. Is there a way to get it back?
